My Friday the 13th had an epic storm, the utter destruction of my umbrella (only the wire frame remained, for reals), the breaking down of my car and a really fun night out with a little too much red wine and fantastic people. All in all, car aside, a fair balance.

I've been meaning to write down my thoughts on Merlin since yesterday, but there is little I can say other than YAY, AWESOME, OMG NO!!! ...okay, maybe fine. In that order. I really loved most of this episode, it was awesome and it also made me tear up, when Merlin and Arthur are in Arthur's room at the end and Arthur says that maybe all magic is evil and Merlin agrees and his eyes are filled with tears and his heart is breaking. OH BOYS, I LOVE YOU SO! Like a lot, a huge lot. There were so many incredible moments, the heart to heart about dead parents was my favourite, thought the rope scene was brilliant as was the fact that it is just assumed that Merlin accompanies Arthur on all his personal quests and was there to whitness his reunion with his mother and is the ONE PERSON that can make him listen and stop him from making a huge mistake. At first I hated how Merlin does it, how he gives everything for Arthur, but at the same time, it is such an immense sacrifice. It is odd, because we know that both would die for one another, but for some reason what Merlin did seems like an even bigger sacrifice to me, it's not just his magic, but the fact that he lied to Arthur in a way that reinforced his hatred for magic. It almost means that he can never tell him now, because Arthur will never trust him.

I know people are pissed about the show not taking that step and see the end as a cop out and that was my initial reaction as well, but I am willing to forgive it, because what Merlin did has to have consequences and even if you are not a shipper, you can not deny how much Merlin cares for Arthur's wellbeing. It was incredible and full of emotions and completely heartbreaking.

Merlin/Arthur aside, Morgause was fantastic, I guess she is meant to be the new villain, but I thought she was awesome. I love that she beat Arthur and she did it without magic and that she didn't trick him, but told him the truth. (Oh, I am sure she has her agenda, and probably wants Uther dead, but she didn't do it by lying and whether or not that really was Ygraine, it doesn't matter, because her words were true)

I should have expected that she is related to Morgana, but I was too busy gleefully slashing them instead. And that tries to conveniently explain away their instant attraction, and totally fails, because it was insane, the looks of lust love between them, from Morgana looking at her all interested from her window to Morgause watching her sleep, and every moment in between!! I hope someone writes a fic about how Morgause really helped Morgana sleep, using more of a hands on approach...

A couple of things made me think about how magic actually works. Obviously, some people are born with it, but Uther seems to have issue with the practicing of magic, and Gaius did that, but I take it he used some sort of tools and isn't magic himself. So there must me different levels and classes of magical users and beings. And that made me think of Morgana and Morgause, if Gaius gave Morgause to the priesteses to be taught magic, does that mean she had to have innate magic, or could anyone just learn? And if it is innate, he must have know she had it, which surely must mean it is an inherited trait. And obviously Morgana too has innate magic, in which case Gaius would have suspected she is magic for a very long time, but what about Uther? Does he simply believe people choose to practice magic or could he suspect Morgana? Maybe I am being stupid and missing something vital, what do you guys think?

I also watched Doctor Who.
Um. I don’t know what I thought, to be honest. On the one hand as a rule I am not overly fond of either zombies or near-future scenarios, on the other, I was entertained and I loved some bits. I think my biggest issue is that at first I thought surely he won’t let them die, that would be too tragic and hopeless and pointless (ant TW already did that) and then I started fearing that he will, (both of which distracted me from the present, which was my fault, but still) only for him to change his mind at the last possible moment. I mean, he had enough time to save them all, had he chosen to do so and it seems to me that that would have been fine, or to let them die, but the things he told Adelaide while still believing he was not interfering. Well, he clearly was interfering. :/

I guess they have to set up for the events leading up to his death and that certainly did that by making him completely imbalanced and I think the last 10 minutes were fantastic in that respect.

I did like Adelaide a lot, her no-nonsense attitude, her immense strength and compassion. There wasn’t enough of the others for me to truly form an opinion or feel bad about their deaths in a less vague way than general tragedy, but I guess that is the norm for a zombie movie, so I expected it.

I did love the casual mention of the gay, married brother a lot. That was lovely. In fact, all the correspondence to earth bits were a nice touch, but I just didn’t feel like it was enough to humanise this episode.

At first I thought Adelaide was going to shoot herself, but then I thought she was going to shoot the Doctor (which, would have made sense really, because I do agree with what she said) so when she actually did kill herself, it ended up being rather unexpected

The Christmas special otoh looks like it is going to be awesome.
