Update: the washer.
As it turns out, the motor for the washer that should agitate and spin the laundry is burned out. The repair guy estimates four or five days to order it. I scheduled a return visit for next Thursday morning, after which point hopefully I'll be able to do laundry that doesn't end up smelling semi-faintly of mildew.
