Whee, Moab! Camping there was a bitch 'cause the ground was so hard, but I enjoyed the diner we ate at :)

OH MY GOD I AM SO JEALOUS.

That looks AMAZING! Can I come? *turns greener*

I miss camping sooo much - I've been trying to figure out a way to go do it this year a bit. I've been daydreaming about a camping/road trip in May either up the goldrush trail into central BC or down to Fort Vancouver in Oregon... but OMG yours is MUCH BETTER.

All those National Parks! *drools* Seriously, I will be anxiously awaiting a play by play! I've been briefly to Phoenix and I spent about 5min (literally) peering into the Grand Canyon, but it was enough for me to really want to go and getter a better look at that part of the continent. That norther desert up around the canyon was spectacular, I seem to remember. I'm especially jealous of Arches NP, and one day I want to go see the NP in NM that has those cave dwellings in the cliff? I've heard all about that.

Well, if one can't actually travel, imaginary travel is the next best thing, and you've got me on a roll now! I'll be daydreaming about a road trip in Arizona/New Mexico all morning commute, ( ... )

Are there any motels in the vicinity of Capitol Reef? I haven't been there in a few years, but there really isn't much by way of civilization nearby. It's beautiful, though. One of my favorite places in the country. You'll be too early for the orchards to have any fruit, but they might be in bloom.

Hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up in one day is doable and awesome, but I very much doubt you'll be able to do another long hike the next day after that, not even if you're in genuine scales-mountains-every-day-and-twice-on-Sunday shape.

Hmmmm, good point about the presence or absence of motels in the vicinity of Capital Reef. I'll do some Google searching and see what I can turn up. As for the hiking... well, we'll see. I remember being incredibly footsore after my forced hike after the bike wheel blowout last July, buuuuuut... well, we'll see. Training!

(I did start my fitness regiment again this morning. 1.5 miles, with no problem from legs... it's the lungs I need to get back into shape!)

Get yourself some good hiking boots. Merrell or Timberland. The shoes make the difference. Remember, all that pretty red rock is actually quite slippery and scrapes like whoa.

Three word...ZION NATIONAL PARK. Seriously. It's much better than Capitol Reef, hands down. Capitol Reef is like Utah on training wheels. Zion is the big kid park, although more rigidly controlled. They have tours now!
