Friday I started off the day by attending the talk by Lawrence Lessig here at RIT. He's a good speaker, entertaining and smart. At one point people asked "why didn't you touch on Google Print, etc, etc." and he responds "I was told to do my 1 hour talk, not my four hour talk..." :)
Then I took my 2nd quiz in class (which I got back today with a perfect score).
Friday went downhill from there (at least for the workday) because I was dealing with Dell. The idjit who was sending new hard drives just sent them to a random RIT address without my name on them. It took quite a while to track them down. Which was made worse because they sent out a technician to do the swaps (I could have done the swaps myself, but why should *I* have to spend my time fixing their horrid mistakes?). RIT is a big place, with many departments, dozens of buildings, etc. The only reason we found the package is I finally got ahold of idjit and got the tracking number. Just sending it to RIT without my name on it is like addressing something to "Rochester, NY" and hoping it finds me. Brilliant people at Dell. And they assured me this was their brightest guy. My words: "That is very sad."
Of course, if I had written this on Friday or Saturday, the above paragraph probably wouldn't been 5 pages of venom. As it is, I still hate Dell.
Because of the screwup, I had the choice of working *very* late on Friday, or going in on Saturday. I chose to work on Saturday, so I could get some sleep and be less burnt out. That went fairly well. Slept real late, and headed in starting in the afternoon. Ended the night by hitting Outback with
theonlyasd and
venlar. Good food.
Sunday was mostly me lazing around. I was pretty burnt out and unmotivated. When I did get up, I talked to the optometrist about my new glasses not working out, went to BJ's for some shopping, K-Mart for more shopping and Border's to take advantage of the 25% off for educators promotion going on until Tuesday.
My new glasses gave me headaches and nausea. Seems it is mainly the type of lenses they used (which I suspected would be a problem). But, we're going to double check my astigmatism correction (which is slight, and I've skipped it in the past because of problems) before doing new lenses. But I got to talk to the tecnician, and many of the things I'd noticed there were good reasons for. I just happen to be sensitive to a lot of things about high-index lenses. Additionally, the glasses had flat fronts (not much curve on the front surface) while my new sunglasses don't, and this is also something I'm sensitive too. But it should all get worked out tomorrow morning.
Today, I caught up on a few things and waited for Dell to follow up with me about what I told them they needed to do to salvage this situation. No call. Surprise. So, I got other things done today, and will resume beating them about the head tomorrow. But, overall, it made for a happier day today. And I got that quiz back with the perfect score. I'm enjoying the class, and getting an A so far makes it even nicer.
