3. Rachel's - Systems/Layers
Origin: USA
Genre: Post-Rock
Might be a bit too erudite for most, but Rachel's totally captures my imagination with their orchestral, minimalist sound. While it is decidedly post-rock and not classical (a drum kit is enough to keep you out of the latter), it also shares many similarities with IDM bands like Boards Of Canada insofar as the use of street noises as instrument and such. It's like BoC without the glitch, Sigur Ros without the weirdalienlanguage, and Kronos Quartet without the technical genius (sorry, but there is only one Kronos) all wrapped together like a modern film soundtrack. This music is amazing.
