almost time for oscars!

As of Sunday I have seen all of the nominations for Best Picture. The only one I want to win is Little Miss Sunshine as I was thoroughly underwhelmed by the others.

And with that, I can finally make my top 10 favourite movies of 2006 list. This year was obviously the year for comedies and sci fi.

1. Children of Men & Pan's Labyrinth (it's a tie!)
both of these were absolutely perfect to me. Children of Men I love for the direction first and foremost, but also for the realism blended with sci fi. Pan's Labyrinth was again a perfect blend of the realities of war and a fantastic world.
3. Little Miss Sunshine
Just.... awesome. Really. That's it. I adored every single character and every single situation they found themselves in.
4. The Prestige
More sci fi! Beautiful film that is even better the second time when you know all the details.
5. V For Vendetta
I know it's not like the comic at all, I know its vision of a revolution is very fluffy, but I still love it.
6. Thank You For Smoking
Smart, funny, political. If only it didn't have Katie Holmes....
7. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
This is also smart, funny, and political. And no Katie Holmes!
8. Clerks II
I was expecting to be disappointed and wasn't. And it definitely stands on its own from the original.
9. The Fountain
Yeah, it doesn't make any sense, but damn, it's PRETTY.
10. The Omen
Normally I don't like remakes that are extremely close to the original, but this one worked for me somehow. I blame Liev Schreiber's arms.

Honourable Mentions (because I'm not sure if they count):
The Descent: this only came to the US this year but was actually made in.... 2004? But it's a damn good horror movie full of kick ass women and creepy monsters. What's not to love?
Brick: half the sites say this came out in 2005 and the other half says early 2006. either way, it's a really interesting film with great direction and atmosphere.
