Besides the chatter that was common in the coffee shop at the corner, there was also the soft clink of a spoon against ceramic. The younger of the two had his head bowed as he stared almost, terrified really, down at the table they were sitting at. His hands were clenched tightly around his cup and dark eyes flickered upwards from his own cup towards the cup the younger was clutching them to the younger man himself. Air hissed from his nose and he raised his own cup of coffee to his lips, taking a quiet sip.

“You’ll break the cup at this rate,” and dark eyes, wide and definitely reminding him of the overall “deer caught in head lights” look flickered up, nervous, terrified. He sighed softly, and leaned back in his chair, throwing his arm over the back of his chair. His eyes moved, flickering over the other patrons before he looked back over at his dongsaeng. He had returned to looking down at the table and the older man figured that he was wishing that the floor would open up and swallow him. He sighed again and spoke, “Ease up will you? I’m not going to eat you Cheulyong-ah,”

Predictably, for him at least, the younger jumped, the cup pretty much shattering when his hands applied more pressure to it. Ceramic flew across the tabletop and he leapt up, a hand moving to catch the younger by the shoulders when he suddenly lost his balance, the other slapping onto the ceramic and table to keep his own balance. A low slew of curses left his lips and he sighed before gently pushing the younger man back into his seat. Wide, doe colored eyes looked at him and he absently grabbed a mass of napkins, pressing a wad onto his palm when he lifted it off the ceramic. With his thumb, he pressed it the best he could onto his palm then, with his free hand, he mopped up Mir’s spilled coffee. He looked up through his bangs and predictably, MBLAQ’s maknae looked guilty and nervous as hell, eyes flickering for a moment to meet his before they flickered back down.

“Again, not going to eat you,” was Joon’s comment and he waved off the concerned workers of the coffee shop when they arrived. A few looked concerned and Joon obviously knew that they recognized both him and Mir. That was their cue to leave. He slipped a handful of bills onto the table, leaving behind a generous tip before he gently caught Mir by the arm with his clean hand and led the two of them out of the shop. Before they even hit the end of the corner, Mir had caught his other hand and gently squeezed it. No doubt the MBLAQ fans in the coffee shop had probably snapped a picture of their linked hands. Joon just smiled softly and squeezed back. Mir managed a weak grin. He felt a slow heat begin at his palm and his eyebrows rose when he felt it spread towards his fingers. It was a rather odd sensation as his skin slowly mended together.

“Hyung, I-“ and Joon cut him off with a light wave just as they entered an alley, a shortcut on their way home.

There was a broken lamppost and the light bulb flickered weakly above them. Joon’s eyes flickered around and Mir swallowed thickly when Joon pushed him to one of the surrounding walls, staring quietly. Mir swallowed again, feeling as if a lump had lodged itself in his throat and he shivered involuntarily when warm breath ghosted over his lips. His eyes flickered nervously and after a moment of trying to swallow that extremely odd lump in his throat he managed a hoarse, “Joonie-hyung I-“

And he couldn’t speak further. Soft lips, though slightly chapped, pressed against his and his eyes widened. The older’s arms curled around him and pulled him close. There was a murmur of, “Please forgive me Cheulyong-ah,” against his lips and Mir really wanted to ask why. Then everything went dark.

Joon was quiet as he held the younger’s limp form in his arms. His eyes tracked the shadows as they moved and the young woman slinked out, sneering.

“And here I thought you wouldn’t do your part Changsun-ah,” she purred. Joon frowned, tightening his hold on Mir’s limp body. Her hand waved, long, delicate fingers brushing at the air and Joon nearly protested when his dongsaeng’s body lifted into the air, floating lifelessly towards her. He forced himself not to take that step forward as Mir’s body floated in the air towards her.

“We’re not on a first name basis,” was his hissed growl and Joon closed his hands into fists at his sides. “And if Cheulyong-ah loses a single hair on his head, no one, I promise you, no one can save you. Do you hear me?”

“Of course,” the woman bowed mockingly, eyes glittering unnaturally. Her fingers snapped and a tall man stepped out just as Mir’s body began descending. Joon nearly started forward when Mir fell into the man’s arms. She smiled and bowed again, a sneer on her lips. “You may come and get in him in two days time Changsun-ah. I promise that no harm will befall the young demi,”

Joon shut his eyes and he felt a strange stone of emotions began its birth deep in his gut. He prayed that his dongsaeng would be fine and in one piece. The air shifted and Joon knew that he as alone. He opened his eyes and looked down at his wrists, seeing the faint band of runes that no one else could. He threw his head back and screamed.

Two days later, Hwang Chansung and Kim Jonghyun both received text messages telling them where to pick up Bang Cheulyong’s body. The healer was admitted immediately to the hospital when he was found. There was no physical harm that anyone could find but no one was sure, only Mir could tell them and he was in no real position to, being unconscious and all. And when Mir finally woke up at the end of the week, Joon was officially declared missing.

And all time everywhere seemed to stop.

Ok Taecyeon frowned as he looked down at his watch, which was still reading 1:59. It had been reading those 3 digits since nearly a week ago and everything seemed to have stopped. Literally. Every clock in the world had spun forwards or backwards to read 1:59 and everything stopped moving. At least, every one else. Only a handful had managed to not get hit. And of course, the non-humans. He was surprised out of his thoughts when there was a low sigh and a small body pressed up against his.

Dark eyes flickered up at him and there was a wry grin on pale pink lips. The other stretched out his legs and he let the taller male take on his weight. Taecyeon had no complaints as he let an arm drape around Jaebum’s form. It just fell into a comfortable silence between them. Then,

“How’s Cheulyong-ah?” Jaebum closed his eyes as he felt Taecyeon’s chest rumble with his words. Gods he missed this but now really wasn’t the time to dwell. The smaller male in turn wrapped his hand around the arm at his stomach and replied, “Coping. Changsun-ah did turn him to the other side for that one brief moment. At least we’re getting him to eat now,”

“That’s good,” and Jaebum nodded, liking the way that the younger’s chest beated, rising and falling with his words and his breath. It soothed his racing heart. “What’s so important about him anyways?”

And Jaebum sat up, turning his body to face his ex-member. He ignored his churning stomach at the thought and crossed his legs. Taecyeon ignored the sudden coldness he felt as his ex-leader move away.

“You know how there are humans and non-humans right?” Jaebum wished internally that the taller, though younger, male hadn’t slept through that lecture. It was somewhat of a pain to gather some odd dozen different idols in central park without cameras, fangirling or fanboying and the press. It was at that moment that Park Gyuri-sshi’s talent of hiding people was exceptionally useful.

“Non-Humans being people who are gifted with different blood lines either through natural birth or grace gifts right?” Taecyeon asked, hesitantly. Jaebum nodded.

“Natural births are quite rare and usually those who are naturally born have more than one blood talent. Generally. Take SHINee’s Jonghyun-ah for example. He’s a natural born shifter. He belongs to no clan so technically, he’s a wild one but he doesn’t fall under that. We don’t really know why. But he’s a shape shifter. I’ve never seen him transform and some other shifter’s I heard of say that the transformation is painless and exceptionally quick. Other than his shifting abilities, he can erase certain parts of people’s memories but he’s only able to do it once. We tried doing it twice and it never really worked. And the strong willed can break his erasing, though that hasn’t really happened yet,”

“So non-natural shifter’s only shape shift? Is there a set like animal or something?”

So maybe he wasn’t listening to that conversation all that much. Then again, Jaebum remembered him constantly staring at him so maybe that was why.

“Shifters generally have a set animal like some change to wolves and other birds and lizards or something else you know? I knew someone who could turn into a chicken but I don’t think that ended all that well. I haven’t heard from him in a long time. And they don’t necessarily need to do full body transformations, they can do partial transformations,”

“I see. Then what about like were-wolves or something?”

“The weres are stronger than their shifter counter parts. Where as the Shifters are painless transformations, the weres hurt a lot. The most common are werewolves and those do change during the full moon. Besides the following the moon’s phases, they also changed during extreme emotional trauma or feelings of protectiveness. I don’t know of any natural weres since the weres are sort of a lesser shifter breed but hybrids have been known to occur. With all races really. SNSD’s Sooyoung is a hybrid. I think some form of large cat and possibly Demi blood, but I’m not too sure,”

Jaebum looked up at Taecyeon to see if he was following and the younger male nodded.

“The creatures are rather what you find in like a fantasy book or something. The Faeries, the Centaurs, the like. They don’t like other races and have a rather prominent hatred for humans and they’re rather violent. The Centaurs and the other quadrupeds don’t venture from their homes often but the two leggers do venture out and they like to cause havoc. Possessions are known to occur and so do large scale catastrophes. Apparently, the fire of London in 1666 was caused by faeries and pixies. For the record, faeries and pixies are nothing like the fantasy books,”

“Creatures hates other races. Got it,” Taecyeon simplified and Jaebum cracked a light smile. “And the Demis?”

“The Demis are kind of the partial gods. Official title is Demi-God but we don’t really like that so we just simplify it to Demis,” Chansung’s voice rang and the two older’s looked up as a few of their odd refugee group joined them; Chansung himself, Jinwoon, Jonghyun, Junho, SNSD’s Sooyoung, Super Junior’s Donghae, KARA’s Gyuri and Big Bang’s Seungri. Jaebum and Taecyeon noted that they had to drag Mir with them. Chansung grinned faintly and it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “God is a title that we don’t want,”

“Demis are separated into 4 categories. Light-Light, Light-Dark, Dark-Light, and Dark-Dark.” Seungri started simply. “There is actually a higher category that’s known as the Order but we don’t really know who or what they are or even if they’re Demis at all. They could be our enemies in all this if anything,”

“All Demi’s are of the same rank, no matter their category. So a Light-Light is the same as a Dark-Light and so on. The categories are mainly there for categorizing abilities and skills,” Jonghyun continued. “Onew-Hyung’s a Dark-Dark. And despite his dorky, squishy outer appearance, he has no problem’s roasting people if they tick him off. At least, non-humans anyways,”

“I’m a Light-Dark,” Gyuri inputted. “I generally specialize in barriers and shielding spells but I can support and defend if need be. Heechul-oppa and Donghae-oppa are Light-Darks too but they’re more combat orientated with the Light spells,” She pointed at Seungri, “Seungri-ah is a Dark-Light, he’s more of the fighter type. He’ll generally tackle in and worry about the fact that he’s bleeding to death a lot later. He can do basic light spells, some basic healing but he’s more towards blowing things up,”

“So the Light oriented ones do Healing and support?” Taecyeon blinked when Junsu joined in, sliding up towards Junho who smiled vaguely at the approaching hyung.

“Generally. But some, like Heechul-hyung and Donghae-hyung who are Light-Dark can do combat. I only know of one Light-Light who’s combat oriented right now,” Jonghyun looked at them then he laughed and hastily, though oddly, amended, “Well, two who are combat oriented. Although one is kind of schizo with his powers,”

“’M not schizo,” Mir muttered quietly and it was his first words in a few days. His voice was rather hoarse. Gyrui laughed softly and gave the younger male a one armed hug.

“Of course you’re not Cheulyong-ah,” she said brightly. Mir smiled weakly.

“Jaebummie-hyung is the other Light-Light that’s combat oriented. Mir is a little bit schizo. He’s the only Demi that we know of who doesn’t have a set category. He was originally a Light-Light, one of our best healers next to Sungmin-hyung but when he gained his pyrokinetic abilities he was switched towards Dark-Light. Then, out of all the Demis in the world, he’s the only one to turn an offensive ability into a supportive ability and since then, he’s been shifting between Light-Light to Dark-Light to even Dark-Dark sometimes,” said Chansung. “Seungo-hyung is the only other Pyrokinetic Demi that we know of and he’s a Dark-Dark although we like to think that Sohee-ah is one too but we haven’t confirmed anything yet. So Cheulyong-ah’s been learning from Seungho-hyung for some time now,”

“The threats are the ones who go loco,” Donghae said almost brightly. Sooyoung irritably slapped his arm and he winced playfully. Mir cracked a weak grin and Jaebum laughed. It was hard to get the humans and non-humans alike to smile these days. He sobered immediately and he continued, “Really. The Threats are pretty much every race that you can think of that just loses control and goes crazy. Demis rarely do go crazy, they’re more likely to go wild, in fact most of them do and some of them are horrible to deal with. When we mention that they fall out of favor, it’s generally with the other Demis. Those are rare though and I don’t think I’ve ever come across one,”

“I heard that Demis are generally humans that are given grace gifts although I don’t know how that process goes. Sungmin-oppa, Heechul-oppa, Seungho-oppa, and myself got the abilities through grace gifts but I don’t really remember any of it,” Gyuri frowned slightly.

“I’m a grace gifted too,” Seungri inputted. “So is Donghae-hyung,”

“I’m a hybrid but the Shifter blood is more dominant in me than the Demi blood,” Sooyoung tapped her chin. “I think Chansung and Cheulyong are the only 2 natural borns so they’re powers are stronger than all of ours. That and Chansung gets his spiffy travel through mirrors thing. Cheulyong is, as mentioned, the only one who managed to wrestle an offensive ability into a supporting ability,”

“Yah!” the non humans were immediately on guard, leaping to their feet instantly and Mir looked concerned when Cheundong hunched over with his hands on his knees. He looked up nervously. “We found Joon-hyung,”

And Mir felt as if the world dropped from beneath him.
