Balcony scrubbed - check, rugs washed - check, dresser painted twice - check, although it will still need at least one, probably three more coats in order to truly change to white from its original dark brown status. The horrors of the storage room are still waiting (what?! It was ESSENTIAL that we went to the library to look for Greek mythology ( Read more... )

either it works and you get to wear it, or it doesn't and you don't get to wear it, but...*g* you never wear it now

LOL!! That's EXACTLY how it is! :D I've had the shirt for years and I've worn it once or twice, always giving up on it because it's too wide and the sleeves are so annoying, but I haven't been able to toss it either since I like the non-symmetrical design, the linen and how well it has been made (a touch of luxury, if you know what I mean). Besides the shirt itself, the sleeves are really wide, so at least in theory there SHOULD be enough fabric. Good idea, that matching existing patterns to it! I'll try that, once I have the courage :D (My BEAUTIFUL shirt will be RUINED if I do it wrong, LOL!!!!!)

The plastic bottle I took to Cyprus was supposed to be tight too, but apparently the airplane travel was too much for it, YUCK! I hate to buy a gallon of oil when you only need a couple of drops for a week (see? Cheap :D)

don't you have those tiny trial oil bottles? 50 ml or how much is in there...

Haven't seen any, just the ordinary slim glass bottles with, um maybe ½ litre of oil in them, and the family-sized plastic jars, that's it :( I was HOPING I could find those trial bottles in Cyprus, but no.

I agree on the recutting, especially if your problem is it being to big. Set-in sleeves are so much more flattering. I can't tell if the top fastens along the side or if it's a pull-over. If the latter, make sure you still have enough ease after you size it down. You could put an inverted zipper in a side seam if you want the bodice to be more fitted.

I'd actually call that style a Dolman sleeve; to me a kimono sleeve is shorter and fuller. I hate the way Dolman sleeves look on me because there is a bunch of extra fabric in the armpit and it tends to make me look like I have one giant boob that goes all the way across. Yuck.

It's a pull-over, the neckline being so wide that I have to wear something underneath, so that will place some restrictions to the sleeves also (I can't take in too much from the sides, otherwise the neckline will be ruined too).

LOL!!! YES!!! The style of the shirt is square and bulky but that doesn't mean I want to have extra boobies in my armpits. Also, since it's from linen, the armpit pouches get REALLY wrinkly and unaesthetic! Hmmm. I wonder if just making the sleeves more narrow would help any? That would be at least easy to test, although I still have to be careful: any stitches on the fabric will surely leave holes in there...

Hey, I was wondering if you could recommend some activities in Helsinki for me to do with my pseudo-nephew? He is 6 and smart as all get out.

Ekatarina, who will be there soon!

Pseudo-nephew being local? Hmmm. Helsinki is definitely no heaven for kids, but there are some things kids love to do here. Feeding the tame red squirrels and tits in Seurasaari is always a hit (= the open air museum/park, no entrance fee if you are not planning on visiting the buildings and frankly, besides the church they really aren't that interesting either), and even when the world is full of better zoos than ours, kids tend to like that too. Or, at least the ferry ride there :D Then there's Heureka, the science centre, full of nice things for kids (and again, there are similar places everywhere else too, and they are usually far bigger than better than ours).

There are some nice playgrounds also, my kids used to love (before their pre-teen snippiness, that is) the one in Hakaniemi, between the Ympyrätalo (= circle house, a round building in the corner of the square) and the sea. And, if you are masochistic enough, there's of course Linnanmäki, our amusement park, that would definitely make you the favourite auntie for ever :D

Actually he is Canadian by way of Glasgow of late. He loves the outdoors so the park stuff should be a good time. I'll check them out.

Thanks.

Oh, and it looks to me like there would be plenty of fabric to reset the sleeves.

I'd watch the pattern to make sure I didn't get them too puffy as that would not jive with the straight line style overall.

I say go for it! Even if everything goes cock-eyed, it would make a spiffy sleeveless shirt/vest thing.

The shirt is supposed to be big and, heh, square, so adjusting it to FIT would be a very bad idea. The sleeves are just so uncomfortable and ugly that I haven't been able to wear it all, AND it's too wide too, I feel as if I was walking around wearing a tent...

I'm still having cold feet about this.. The shirt is really lovely (it doesn't quite show in the picture, I admit) so ruining it would make me really sad, even if I don't actually wear it :P

Hmmmm,.... If you have any sewing mad pals they could give you a better idea after actually handling the shirt. Heck I'd take a look at it if you like.

Maybe it would be a nice gift for someone? Or a consignment shop item?
