I mean christ, when even something like FANDOM SECRETS has little piss wars over things like people saying 'kid' in their comments...what the fuck? Get OVER YOURSELVES PEOPLE.
There is just something about certain Internet communities that makes some people psychotic (not you, Kuni, we like you). ;)
I suspect it's the fact people can respond to each other in relative anonymity that makes them feel free to go batty with the rude, hurtful and profane comments. It's why I try to avoid certain hobby-related message boards. Though sometimes reading other people's flame wars is fascinating, in a bad way, like beeing a looky-loo when there's an accident on the freeway. Which is why I tried to tell myself "No! Don't read them! Don't!"
I think I agree with Mr. Tanuki on the reasoning - people are starting (very slowly) to realize that what they say on the internet ISN'T all that anonymous and CAN come back and bite them big time--but it's been happening since the bulletin board days--you feel free to be as rude as you like because they don't know you and you'll never have to face them in real life, right? Until they show up at the house with a gun, that is...
It's one of the reasons I used to worry when your ex-roomie would put up all these fake personas in fake locations - if someone really decided to find that person, the trail would come right to MY computer! And since I don't invest in heavy-duty protections, it's not that hard to find!
At least you have the three really good people - stick to the good stuff and don't worry about the great big bad net out there missing out on your glorious-ness--- they'll just have to cope. Besides, when school starts you won't have much internet time anyway!
Your delm speaks wisely on this one. If these communities cause anxiety and distress, then obviously they are not the kind of internet community one wishes to frequent.
Unless there are ninjas. And possibly ice cream. Mmmm, ice cream.
