WORD Meme

Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you.

firthgirl gave me: GILES, Ohio, Repo!, biking, ASH.

GILES

The perfect type of character.

The kind of person you would want around in danger (because he's smart and can fight...when he's not being knocked unconscious).

Someone with a wicked back story.

Someone who has overcome the wickedness (mostly) and come out the other side a little damaged, but the better for it.

Someone full of little surprises.

It actually took me until the beginning of S3 to realize how awesome Giles was as a character. Probably because they allowed him to be fleshed out a bit over time.

Ohio

I was born & raised in Ohio. And despite my desire to go coastal, I'm still here.
Some things about Ohio:
+ Extreme weather - blizzards, hail storms, 100 degree weather, and anything in between. But other than the occasional tornado, we don't have any natural disasters.
+ The cost of living here is CHEAP - even in the cities.
+ We are largely a farm state, which means it's easy to take for granted things like fresh Ohio sweet corn or homegrown apples.
+ The classic images of the checkered table cloth while an extended family gathers round to celebrate a patriotic holiday - THAT could be anywhere in Ohio.
+ The BEST roller coasters in the world. After Cedar Point, you will never really enjoy another amusement park again. Not even Disney World.
+ We measure distance in time. You will never hear an Ohioan say "It's 50 miles away". You will only hear them say "It's about 30 or 40 minutes".
+ Probably because we can drive EVERYWHERE - and most places are 2 hours away or less.
+ Festivals. Every city has a festival. Sweet corn, Cider, Duct Tape, Ice Cream, Pumpkin, Tomato, Strawberry........ you name it, there is a town in Ohio that has a festival dedicated to it. Being in a city means we have festivals from spring through fall.

Repo!
My favorite-most-original-movie-I've-seen-in-forever Film

I actually ran across something about this film on the interwebz before it's release, thought it looked interesting, and (because there was NO marketing) forgot all about it. Then I got into about S3 of Buffy, which is when my Anthony Stewart Head obsession started, and I remembered Repo! The Genetic Opera. Anthony Stewart Head singing might be my favorite kind of Anthony Stewart Head.

But I fell in love with the entire film on the first viewing. The style, the intertwined storylines, the singing, the gore, the humor. It's the first and only opera I've ever really loved.

THEN I wandered onto the Repo! website boards and, well, met some other crazy Repo! fans and somehow got sucked into this cult thing. Enough that I drug 3 other people and myself to Toledo (two hours drive each way) to see a shadow casting. Enough that I've drawn some fan art. Enough that I've posted way too much about it already. Here's the soundtrack if you haven't heard it yet.

Biking

I was one of those kids who spent hours riding my bike up and down the same streets all day. A few years ago I started noticing bikes around the city, and really began to miss riding bikes.

Now I ride pretty regularly. I do it #1 because I enjoy it. But also because it's good exercise and it's GREAT for the environment. Do you know how often we hop in the car to drive less than 5 miles to the library, grocery store, club, even work, etc? No more! I try to take my bike anywhere and everywhere I can.

I also met some awesome bike-ridin' women who do a weekly ladies ride. I keep having to miss them lately, but when I go I love it. Most of them are younger than me, with sweeter, faster bikes than me, and that kicks my ass a little bit, but in the good way.

I've even become a tiny bit political in my riding and have been known to write emails in support or opposition of legislation specifically because of it's affects on the cycling community.

I will still never wear spandex.

ASH
Mr. Anthony Stewart Head

A year ago, I probably couldn't have told you who ASH was. I had never seen or heard of those stupid coffee commercials. And I hadn't watched Buffy.

Once I started noticing the nuanced performance he gave (dry humor, cloaked emotion) in a show with a pretty ridiculous premise, I started paying attention.

And watching everything I could that included him.

And it didn't take long (a quick YouTube search) to discover the man can sing.

So, I have to sidebar here for a minute.

Generally speaking, when men watch a concert given by their favorite band, they visualize themselves as part of the band. They want to be their idols, or at least a reflection of their idols.

Generally speaking, when women watch a concert given by their favorite band, they want to do their idols. They want to be a part of the idol.

I experience these types of events much more like men - I want to be on stage rockin' out. I might still want to do the drummer if he's hott, but given my choice, I would JOIN the band. I have never had any interest in the 'supportive and understanding female' role.

So, back to ASH.

I started noticing him FIRST as an actor and musician. Hearing him speak about the craft of acting - that's motivation for me to get focused on whatever I should be doing (even if it's running scales I've had memorized for 12 years on the tuba).

He seems like a genuinely funny, great guy. And, yes, I absolutely think he's crazy hott. But mostly I see talent and hard work, and find that creatively inspiring. (And yes, I also realize how cheesy that sounds). Given the chance, I could sit down in the pub and buy that man drinks all night and just listen to what he has to say.
