I had just learned that the TSD student who would have tested with me in May has suffered spinal injuries, and is forced to withdraw. I hear that he's feeling numbness along one side of his body, and it's creeping further along. His doctor says that his martial arts career is basically over

Yikes! What happened to him? It sounds like some kind of progressive disease process.

He did in fact have some spinal issues, but I don't know the extent of this. I also don't know what triggered the injury, but it wasn't sparring. I'm facing that boundary where my curiousity and concern are struggling with the realization that it's not a good time to pry into such things. Later, yes, but not now.
