My computer-fixing alter ego has been very busy lately

This weeks been a fairly good week for me on the computer front.  I finished one very delayed project only to be handed another one that same day!  The reason I said the first project was very delayed was due to the fact I've been so busy with work and church that I hadn't even had a chance to touch it until this week.  And the fact that it was rushed was evident because after I put the new hard drive in, installed Windows XP and Office, I sent it back to it's owner without installing any of the drivers (Dell opted NOT to give her a restore disk...it was on the hard drive...which I had to replace...you see where this is going).  Luckily I told her before I even took it on that I was under a fairly heavy workload otherwise and I couldn't give her a firm timeframe as to when I would be done with it, and I didn't charge her any of the work, and I even paid for the shipping on the drive (it was only $5).

I don't like the fact that I had to rush through it as fast as I did.  It went from not needing it to needing it so I had to get in gear and get it done.  I keep trying to convince my father that if I want to be successful at repairing computers for a living I need to cut out working at Skyline to do it right.  But since I'm still living in "his house" I have to abide by "his rules" and keep my "job".  To be honest it's frustrating me.  At least now I have evidence and mom on my side to say yes...this isn't working.  If I want to be profitable...I can't give work away, yet I can't charge for someting I did slapdashed at the last minute and it took me over 2 weeks to get it that far.  It's a catch 22.  he only see it from a consistant income point of view and that I would not have what he defines as a "real job".  I keep trying to remind him that he worked for himself once, when he was farming full time.  And that this is no different than that.  But alas...I can't get him to understand that.

I've already promised Skyline the next year and a half of my life or at least until the new store takes off on it's own.  I have them on the same page with me in the respect that eventually I'm going to walk away from it and do my own thing, but I've given them a time frame and they'll know 6 months in advance they'll need to replace me.  I told them that more than likely that last 6 months I'll go to a weekend (Fri-Sun) only manager and fill in on an incidental basis until they get my replacement up to par.

Today was my day off from skyline, and it was the first day in a while I haven't had other places I had to be.  So I was actually able to enjoy being off.  I've resorted to turning my cell phone off and checking my messages a couple of times a day.  Some people at work have decided I'm the go to guy when they need a day off and they like to call me and guilt me into working for them.  Today was no exception.  In between the time I left for Richmond (which was about 2:30 PM) and the time I got home (around 7:00 PM) I had 2 phone calls and one voicemail.  It was at 2:35 PM I got a call from someone at work wanting me to work for them.  I'm also getting really good about saying "no".  I've turned down no less than 3 extra shifts in the past 2 weeks.
