So I saw the news about the Hobbit being extended from two movies to three. Far be it from me to be a movie critic but I really feel like this is a greedy attempt to milk an already pretty bloated franchise. Now note I liked the first three movies very much. But in that case three movies made sense for three books. Hell those probably could have been more than three since the books are so dense. But the Hobbit is different. The Hobbit has neither a staggering built in history or lavish backstories for each character. It was written more simply and aimed at a younger group. There are few if any complex conversations, and for a Tolkien work its pretty action driven. So to stretch it to three movies seems stupid to me. I can halfway see where you might make a story break for two (Right around the time they stop at Beorn's place), but three? If you're going to go for multiples like that, wouldn't a mini-series be better? And I'm not just saying this because the Hobbit is in my top ten list of books and has a special place as one of the few novels in which I have not just a favorite page but a favorite line. It really seems like a bad business decision with as few movies as people are seeing these days. I'm guessing they're banking on the crowds who used to go watch the Potter stuff to fill the void, but still. WTF?
