Women know that pregnancy means that there is a baby in there
One of my in-laws posted some pithy idiotic anti-abortion thing on facebook and ordinarily I would just ignore it but today I heard that the bill supported by that awful Georgia Rep* passed (though it was a "compromise" that did allow termination of non-viable fetuses) and being silent feels too much like agreement.
So here is what I posted in the comments of her facebook post. I'm not going to post it on Facebook myself because I really don't need the drama, but I thought I would put it here, for a more discerning audience.
Pregnancy is to me like driving past a hitchhiker in a snowstorm. Should you stop for that hitchhiker? Morally, yes, you should-they'll die if you don't. Should you be legally required to stop for that hitchhiker? No way! You could have a million good reasons for stopping (from “I knew him” to “it was the right thing to do”) but you can also have a million good reasons not to stop (from “there wasn't any room in my car” to “he looked dangerous”) If you want to sit in judgment of other people, that's your business I guess, but it seems patently unfair to legislate about what other drivers choose to do. Much like picking up hitchhikers, pregnancy is dangerous (10 times more dangerous than abortion) and you can't know what is going on in every person's life and why they might choose to drive past that hitchhiker who needs them so very much. Until we have a way to safely bring a baby into the world that doesn't require hijacking a woman's body, women are going to choose who gets in their cars and that is a good thing!
I could go into how I wish Casey Anthony had better access to abortion since I don't think there is a single person, including her own child, who is better off because she gave birth, but I've already ranted enough here.
Though I will say that I hope you also support WIC and public education and Obamacare because those are things that take care of the babies that are already here, and make it easier for families to pick-up hitchhikers that they might not have room for otherwise. Once we are taking proper care of the already born, we can talk about the fate of the unborn.
