I started to post about this on FB, but realized I want to ramble and whine more than the short form will really allow, so I'm going to post something here, and try not to feel to guilty about all the milestones that have pasted with nary a word.
Two weeks ago, on Friday night, a very large tree limb fell on our house and van. No one was hurt, and the damage to the house is minor, so I suppose I should feel blessed or spared, but since it will take 4 weeks to fix the car, I'm having a hard time finding my gratitude. I don't think of us as being huge car people, since we've only got the one vehicle, Stony telecommutes most days, and I regularly use the bus to get downtown. The scales have fallen from my eyes on that one--we *need* our car. Grocery shopping has been this complicated painful dance, and I kind of discount driving Mica to or from school each day, but it is actually a lot of driving. We've been lucky enough to be able to borrow a car from friends, but it's only a car not a van, so I can take Mica and his carpool buddy, but not bring Corvus along too, so Stony has to watch him, and mostly our routine was shot to hell.
Then last week, on Friday night, Raine came into our room saying she didn't feel well. Sure enough she had a fever, which went up and down and up and down as her cough slowly got worse. Called the nurses hotline on Monday, and she said hold tight, probably a virus, see a doctor if its been five days. So on Wednesday we went to the doctor (which required borrowing the car again) and of course she had no temperature at the doctor's office, so the doctor listened to her lungs and said she'd be fine and sent us on our way. So then on Thursday she was worse again, so we played phone tag with the doctor's office and finally got a prescription phoned in on Friday, which Stony was able to pick up by bike after the kids went to bed. And of course today her fever is gone so we haven't even cracked the bottle.
But to top it off, Corvus got sick last night (I'm beginning to hate Fridays!) and has been running a pretty high temperature most of the day. He had a low grade fever last weekend so I had been hoping that this illness had passed over him lightly, but no such luck. We'll see how he does tomorrow, but I maybe pushing harder and faster for a script for him. I really can't take another week of keeping a kid home sick.
And to top it off, March was going to be such a productive month for me. I'm going to the spring intensive put on by my RWA chapter at the end of the month and have a goal of editing a chapter a day so that I have something polished and complete to take with me. It's day 10 and I'm done with chapter 8 so I haven't fallen as far behind as I could have, but damn, my writing karma (or health karma?) needs work!
