Happy Birthday, Mica?

I want to write a post gushing about my little boy on his first birthday. The changes in the first year are just amazing. A year ago he had a lot in common with a doll. Now he's cruising and signing, and stacking blocks. He weighed 26 pounds at his 12 month check-up, and didn't even flinch when getting his shot. He has opinions and desires beyond food and sleep. He loves balls and books. He'll push Go, Dog, Go all over the room to find someone to read it to him. I nearly took a picture of Raine "reading" to him this morning, but as soon as he saw me he tried to pull the book out of her hands to give to me, and the touching scene predictably degenerated into a tug-of-war. If I'm sitting on the floor he'll bring a book over and then maneuver himself into my lap since that is the proper book reading pose. Of course, he also has the attention span of a one-year-old so it is rare that we flip through more than a couple of pages before he gets bored and crawls off to something more exciting.

Yes, I want to spend the day focused on Mica, since it is his day. But unfortunately I'm distracted. The cat has been fighting a lot lately, and yesterday maxemulien noticed that he had a nickle sized weeping sore on his flank. So now the cat is at the vet. And I want to make cake for Mica's birthday, but I'm not sure who will eat it, since all of us (except Mica--knock on wood) have been hit by the tummy bug Raine had last week, and I'm not completely convinced that even she is completely recovered. We were going to take treats over to CoHo to celebrate, and my mother was even planning on coming up to see him, but those plans have all been scrapped.

I have a writer's conference in Portland this weekend, and so I may go take a nap instead of baking a cake, because I really just want to be all better already.
