awkward link for toilet insertwhyioughtaDecember 14 2005, 03:43:44 UTC
If the link below does not work, go to Target.com and then key in "mommy's helper Potty Training Pack". This is not exactly what I saw in the local Target, but one of the items in this package does show a foldable toilet insert that pops down onto a toilet. I saw it when J. was 2 and 1/2, and thought it might be to flimsy for her at that age/weight, but at less than a year, it might be helpful. It looked like something that would fit easily into a diaper bag or big purse.

That foldable one looks like exactly what I want (not real interested in the other stuff in the pack, though ;) I'll have to see what I can find next time I go to Target.
Cloth diapers are real diapers!goteamDecember 14 2005, 05:08:11 UTC
And I distinctly remember them as being way more comfortable than the icky sticky plastic kind. Then again, I'm also a giant hippie chick who prefers cloth pads to the horrible plastic and paper things, so apply salt as you will. My only concern/drawback about cloth diapers is that eventually Raine will figure out how the pins work, only I sincerely hope she never gets one stuck in her hand like I did (speaking of distinct memories: I can clearly visualize it even now, and remember thinking "That should hurt a lot more" --- my first experience with shock!)
I didn't mean to imply that cloth diapers aren't real, it's just that I'm not looking for real diapers. Real diapers (whether cloth or disposable--both of which have changed a lot; pins and external plastic are a thing of the past) are a bit awkward to take on and off and absorb more than we need except at night and in unfriendly potty places. What I want only needs to hold a pee or two and ideally can be pulled off like underwear or opened at the sides like a diaper. A friend of mine has ordered some fuzzy bunz (yes, that is a just too cute brand name for a type of all-in-one) which I'll want to look at, but they might actually be too absorbent for our needs.
I hear fuzzy bunz are indeed "real" diapers. Below are some links to some places that may offer the type of pants you're looking for. We haven't gotten them yet mainly because they're expensive and we're still missing often enough that we'd have to get a lot of them. We're using prefolds folded in 3rds set in a snap waterproof diaper cover (http://www.theecstore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=175&products_id=606... )
pottying on the gokimdonsDecember 14 2005, 22:53:07 UTC
How did you hold her on the toilet? I sit on it backward with Aria's thighs in my hands, her feet on the toilet seat, and her armpits supported by my arms. I'm sure it's different for older babies, but I know other people with older babies do a similar hold.
What we're doing on the go is either pottying her outside in the grass or else in a wet-bag (waterproof bag used for camping) with a prefold in it to soak up the elimination. It's compact but takes a little practice to hold her leak-free.
Other people carry around Baby Bjorn Little Potties. They seem too cumbersome to me though.
I totally agree about the unhygenic diaper-poops. When I catch poos they are so much cleaner!
What are you using at home? Is it a toilet seat insert? That seems useful once Aria can sit up by herself.
Keep me posted! I'm interested to hear more about what happens as babies get older...

I did the hands under thighs, her back to my chest position at the restaurant(both with me crouched in front of the toilet, and then with me sitting on the toilet behind her) It worked okay, and she actually peed into the toilet just fine, but poops have become a bit of a process for her (we're still fighting constipation on and off, though more off these days, knock-on-wood) At home we have an insert seat, and our normal routine is for me to make sure she stays balanced with hands around her ribcage while she faces me. We make eye contact a lot, and she gets some flexibility of position. Her feet are generally up on the normal toilet seat, to be more squatting, but sometimes she likes to lean really far forward in a compact squat, and sometimes she more arches her back. I think she likes to be able to wiggle around a little and see me. Anyway, not doing her normal routine meant she wasn't interested in pooping (she had pooped just enough in the diaper to relieve herself, and then she had a real poop at home) It didn't help
