Jan 23, 2013 09:42

I tried to get this to post on Jan. 25, but DW didn't want to play.
So here is your birthday post a bit early.

You are celebrating your birthday but the rest of us are
celebrating the anniversary of you arriving in the world
and making it a better, happier place for us.
Happy Birthday.

As ever great thoughts ... had to pop in even though it's for Slayme as I just love that first image ... and the poem you chose.

PS - Happy Birthday slaymesoftly

I thought the base for the first photo was something Spike's William side might have had tucked away. This poem is about a woman moving on and how sad the poet was due to that. Well, I think that is what it is about. I'm not much for poetry.

When I first saw "Chosen", I thought Spike believed Buffy, but wanted her to save herself. As time has gone on, I think he really didn't believe she could love him. This is why he didn't go to Rome when he first came back. He thought him being back somehow lessened his part in closing the Hellmouth. I don't think Buffy would think that, but Spike always thought he didn't deserve love even when he tried to find it so hard.

I think my initial thought was that of "saving" Buffy... but like you I think he never felt that he was loved - she was such a girl of denial and mixed messages and he had always been #2 in Dru's eyes. Then add the inner conflict of his soul and he felt unloved.

I suppose it is something I (and many) can relate to - and that's what makes the character (& the show) so special.

I guess as I've had less than a year to "live" with the show - and I have not seen AtS and anything else (Comics? What comics?) I prefer to stick with the "they understood one another" theory as stated most eloquently by the_royal_anna (and more recently by lostboy-lj). That and my own "Joss Whedon is a bastard" theory. Otherwise, I'll be over here in my happy place...

That first image is really gorgeous; I collect antique photos (of women), and you really made the image of Buffy and Spike in the embossed cardboard frame look authentic. Lovely.

I haven't seen either of these theories posted so I can't speak about their opinions. I thought at first that he just wanted her to leave, but now after a few years I've changed my mind. Watching ATS and talking to James Marsters has given me new views of what I saw ( ... )

You've talked to JM in person? Neat. What did he say? Was it at a convention or in a work setting ( ... )

Re: the movie, I'd say what Joss did to his own story was worse. The movie didn't offend me or destroy beloved characters; it amused me once or twice, had an interesting dream sequence where Buffy imagines Lothos (or whatever his name was) in bed with her; I wished THAT had been more of the movie and the tone of that scene is preserved in the series. So at least there was something there to build upon, and the rest could be politely ignored.

But the comics? Joss is just destroying his own story, ripping apart the mythology of it and destroying beloved characters - because he can? Because he doesn't care? Because he's thumbing his nose at fandom? Because he's tired of Buffy, but feels compelled to keep her going because of demand? She made him rich and famous, or rather fans did, and he has a love/hate relationship with her and fandom? All of the above? The big question "Who is going to betray Buffy? Who is the one closest to her?" Why, Joss of course.

Rant over, thanks muchly. *climbs off soapbox*

You know how much I love these mixtures of pictures and things! These are all amazing.
I'm reading the comics, but I get the occasional urge to write something set in that verse that is Spuffier than anything we're likely to actually get. I'm not sure whose the bigger tease - Buffy or Joss. LOL He's the one who makes her so wishy washy and non-talky when she needs to be clear about how she feels. I feel free to make her spit it out when she gets the chance - eventually, anyway...

Thank you, thank you. I love my prezzie! I love you. :)

Massive hugs!

Joss will never allow Buffy to be happy. He makes her doubt everything in her life. Sadly I get how Buffy is afraid to believe she might be happy or loved. Her dad, Angel, her friends, and even her human boyfriends all screwed her over. Same sort of thing happened to me. So I understand how trusting is difficult for her. She is terrified to trust that someone could really just love her and want to be good to her. That's what ruins it for her and Spike. She thinks if she lets herself be happy or love him, bad things will happen. I'm very much the same. Better to be alone than to have your worse fears come true. Yes, I'm a very sad person when it comes to trust or love. I set up road blocks very much like Buffy.

Fan fiction authors are much kinder to Buffy. Joss will never let her move past her trust issues.

*alas* I'm sure you're right. Letting her be happy would remove a lot of the drama, and that's what he's selling.

BTW - I had to go to your journal to find this. It never showed up on my flist! Not as of yet, anyway. That's really weird. I just checked again, in case it came in while I was somewhere else, but it's not there. I don't think that's ever happened before....

ETA - I wonder if LJ isn't going to let me see it until tomorrow? I'll bet that's it, if you tried to get it to post on a certain day, it's not going to show up until tomorrow. Let's see if that happens.

On LJ, you can edit the date so it posts on that day. I tried that on DW, but it showed on my journal right away and crossposted to LJ right away. So I deleted it and reposted. Two of my flist saw it the same day. So I don't know why they could see it and you couldn't. DW is so odd sometimes. LJ is easier to use when it works.

Joss is so not about his characters being happy. One moment of happiness ends very badly for them. Joyce going on a good date and she is dead the next day. Willow and Tara making up for one night and Tara gets shot. Poor Giles makes up with Jenny then Angelus kills her leaving her in Giles' bed. And those are just a few of the painful moments Joss has given us.
