Writer's Block from yesterday...

Okay, I didn't answer this question, but it did prompt me to remember something.
I might give children books to read or read to them, but I would fit the book to the child.
Under the cut is the memory this question sparked.

Which books will you certainly read to your children, nieces, nephews or godchildren?

Good point.

A lot of parents use the TV as the "babysitter" rather than spend time talking to them

LOL! I got a gold star.

I dated a guy who had three kids. He booked them in sports and stuff so they were always scheduled and had little down time. I felt bad about it because I wondered when he spent time with them. I told him they needed time to just be kids. He disagreed. Said he was afraid they would get into drugs or something if they had free time.

My kids played board games and card games with us almost each day when they were growing up. We spent time playing the games, but talked as well. We did watch TV and movies quite a bit, but we would talk about what we watched as well. They had no problems talking to me about anything growing up and still don't today. I just feel that too often teachers, coaches or others make impressions on kids instead of parents.

When we were kids it was jigsaws if it was just the 3 of us ... board games and dominoes for the 5 of us ... or family films on the TV ... so we could chat and/or be together.

I can see what your ex-friend meant ... a lot of kids are left to their own devices ... TV and then nothing, and so can drift into boredom, and drugs. However spending time with them, as well as local sports clubs would have been even better.

I think it's sad that kids can't be kids much now, playing is so rarely seen these days.

I love to play dominoes. It's sort of a big thing here in the south. When I was growing we had a pool hall and a dominoes hall in town. Women were not allowed in either of them. LOL, guess the men thought we might beat them.

*g* - it was Mum who taught us ... she learnt it from her Uncle, who was out a couple of nights a week. One night dominoes, the other shove ha'penny.

btw - we mostly played with a set of Double 9's

We only had double six set of dominoes. We did play a game called Mexican Sweat. The dominoes are divided by the four players. The one with double six places it in the middle. Each player take their turn playing only on their side. If you can't play on your side, you pass. Then your side is open for others to play on to get rid of their extra dominoes till it comes around to you again. Then you play on your own side or if one of the others has passed, you can play on their side. First one to play all their hand wins the remaining count in the other players hands. Then who ever has the double five begins a new round. You play all the way down from double six to the double blank and back up to the double six again. The one with the highest count from each score wins.

My mom and dad played a game called 42 that used a double set of six. I never learned how to play that. Never heard of shove ha'penny.

Yay - "twin"

You are the only person I know, other than our family, who play that way!
