The Tynes family, like lots of others, are scattered across the country, but our son, John, and two of his first cousins live here. And, you know what is really great? We all like each other! A new generation is coming along and it was such fun at a birthday gathering last week, to see all those kids rambling around. I so love it that our granddaughter will grow up close to her cousins.
Last week, we celebrated two birthdays-Jenny (our daughter-in-law) and David, our nephew. I loved the conversations during the evening. The flow went from family law, owls, virtual reality games, but honestly there was a lot of talk about food and the kids, what else?
Our son put together a kick ass Salad Nicoise for that army of kin, plus fresh pasta for the kids. Yep, we had a kids’ only table and they loved that. Not sure the twelve year old and the nine year old were always thrilled about lumped in with the 2, 4 and 5 year olds, but they made the best of it.
Our tradition is that the birthday person gets to choose the menu. Jenny asked me to make a flourless chocolate cake. I love a cooking project! The ingredients are few, but the method is a bit complex. The cake turned out great! Also the Raspberry Couli for the topping. David and his wife, Diana, are vegans so they brought his cake and ate what they could of the Salad Nicoise.
I will have to say, the highlight of the evening maybe when four year old Jack crawled up on the couch with me for a cuddle.
I miss my sister, Lynn, who lives with my niece, Lacey back in Memphis and my nephew Matt. We made many happy memories together. I so hope we will have time together in the future. In the meantime I am so grateful for Facebook, where I keep up with family. Do look at the pictures! David is our family photographer at our gatherings. I think Chris took over the camera a couple of times! That is David with the goofy grin!
