Big powder day, the smell of gunsmoke, it's like Christmas on the fourth of July...

Had a big old field day yesterday. The TFR forum goons from Somethingawful were having a shooting meet at Mary's Peak, a big old mountain outside of Corvallis, and I managed to hook a ride down from my city to it. After spending 90 minutes on I-5 and the time it took to get to Mary's Peak and get setup, hours of shooting ensued. After that, pizza and beer at American Dream Pizza in downtown Corvallis, followed by another 90 minutes on I-5. All in all, a satisfactorily tiring day, as evidenced by the fact that I basically collapsed into bed at 10 PM and basically got up just now.

I brought down the three guns I own (a Turkish Mauser, a Marlin 60 .22 caliber rifle, and my Remington 870 shotgun). The Marlin and the Remington both ran tops, but the Mauser apparently has a weak firing pin spring or something and wouldn't ignite its ammo. That gun has been a bane to me ever since I got it back in 2002. The Marlin rifle was pretty nice and sweet, low recoil, semi-auto, holds 14 rounds in the tube. The tube is the weak point, though, since reloading it is a pain. My Remington 12-gauge was pretty sweet, though. Kicks back hard, and I probably ran about a hundred shells through it. The highlight of shooting it was when someone threw a jug of water up in the air into the firing area and I blew it apart mid-flight, basically firing from the hip. God, I hope someone got a picture of that. There were also some insane (but legal) Tannerite charges detonated, leaving about five seconds of sheer kaboom noise in the forest air each time.

I also got to shoot some other guns - a Remington 700 bolt-action rifle in .308 (shit really kicks back), a semi-auto Polish Tantal AK-74 (bigger sound and smaller ammo than I expected - but awesome as hell), a .17 HMR bolt-action, some nice little .22 revolver, and a SPAS-12 shotgun.

All in all, a damn good day, and I plan to go again when one comes up. Someone took pics in the meet thread, which I'll link to once they're all uploaded. You might even see some of me, for once.

Miraculously, no one was injured (except for my thumb, which got pinched between a pistol slide and frame while firing, drawing blood ).
