Somnolence

My sleep has been less restful in recent months than is good for me, and I had no idea until two days ago. To counteract some mild sleep deprivation, I availed myself of some Nyquil. I woke up fabulously, not still sleepy, not groggy, and had the energy to go a full day without even thinking of having a nap.

I think, whether I'm aware or not, I'm waking up, or at least coming out of deep sleep several times during the night. How do I make sure I'm getting enough REM sleep without getting myself hooked on sleep aids?

Please help. I shouldn't have to feel like I need coffee or a nap every day.
