Chivalry is on vacation. We'll at least that's what it seems like today. I decided to continue my personal commitment to the environment and catch public transport today, despite having three different places to go to. It all worked out really well. Except when I was on to the train heading home, an older lady hopped on. She used the rails to hop on and from the look of her eyes had an obvious vision impairment. Despite this, no one stood to offer her their seat. Even though I was halfway up the carriage I ended up getting up and asking "Mam, would you like a seat". In this case she declined as she was getting off at the next stop.. but I was still shocked at everyone. There was even a police officer heading home from work who didn't offer his seat.
I expect better.
I am however quite impressed with two Associations Forum talks I went to today. The one this evening was about recruiting and retaining volunteers. It reminded my of research I've conducted and read. Volunteering is one of the few things that has a link to life satisfaction. Volunteers live longer. We'll I'm sold already. And I was really impressed today by the idea of getting families involved in volunteering where everyone has a part to play. That way people can kill two birds with one stone with volunteering and quality family time.. and we also breed the next generation of volunteers.
