Re:

This statement:

>An uncle even went far enough to suggest that, in comparison with McBurgers, vada-paavs would rule the roost

and this one:

>inedible mix ...It - was - not - tasty.

Your uncle was being absolutely truthful. You just misinterpreted him.

Point is, he misinterpreted the name of the dish.

For all I know, vada (as in the South Indian doughnut-shaped dish) paav might be a lot tastier than anything ever made.

(Yes, a little coconut or garlic chutney might help)

:) Of course, to further this confusion, the Gujjus have another (but similar) dish called vada-paav. What you know as a vada-paav is known as a Bombay vada in A'bad and suchlike places. In my opinion, that vada-paav is tastier than your vada-paav. Also, you should probably stick to Rasam shattam to prevent your head from exlpoding.

Would you be referring, by any chance, to daabelis?

It's a paav bread stuffed with fried groundnuts and smothered with garlic, tomato and tamarind sauces. Yum-mm.

Yeah, that's it. When I was in Ahmedabad, it was described to me as vada paav, and junta around me called it the same thing.

>Yum-mm.

Indeed. I have an uncle who used to call me whenever I was far from A'bad just to tell me that he was eating vada-paav. His evil ways led me to name him Shakuni mama.

Hmmm... I think it's called vada-paav there because of the migratory population flocking between Mumbai and Ahmedabad -- a case of an existing name given to a similar dish for familiarity's sake (?)

In Bombay, there is nothing called a bonda. Even the South Indians call it vadaa over here. The person who told you abt the gr8ness of vadaa paav (which is 100% correct) did not misinterpret.

Beauty is in the eyr of the beholder. Subjective.

A vada is a doughnut shaped dish; it is not a bonda. Fact.
