You bought 4 vadas and one paav. By God, that is 3 vadas too many.
And please do not degrade the holy vada paav based on one sample (which consisted of 3 vadaas too many).
And with respect to the whole McBurger comparison, I believe the burger has no chance, whether it be gastronomically or economically.

There was no problem with the paav. The problem was with the bondas.

It should be called bonda paav or paav bonda.

Even Americans can distinguish between a vada and a bonda. Maharashtrapathis. Ha!

Re:

This statement:

>An uncle even went far enough to suggest that, in comparison with McBurgers, vada-paavs would rule the roost

and this one:

>inedible mix ...It - was - not - tasty.

Your uncle was being absolutely truthful. You just misinterpreted him.

Point is, he misinterpreted the name of the dish.

For all I know, vada (as in the South Indian doughnut-shaped dish) paav might be a lot tastier than anything ever made.

(Yes, a little coconut or garlic chutney might help)

:) Of course, to further this confusion, the Gujjus have another (but similar) dish called vada-paav. What you know as a vada-paav is known as a Bombay vada in A'bad and suchlike places. In my opinion, that vada-paav is tastier than your vada-paav. Also, you should probably stick to Rasam shattam to prevent your head from exlpoding.

Would you be referring, by any chance, to daabelis?

It's a paav bread stuffed with fried groundnuts and smothered with garlic, tomato and tamarind sauces. Yum-mm.

I agree, vada paavs are more than a little overrated.

Btw, in your picture, it looks like a green beetle is burrowing into the vada paav :D

Imo, it looks like the vada-paav is giving birth to a green beetle.

Heheh. I guess you can see it either way.

Na! It looks like a post-modern snail!

Also, given the way the paav is facing, it seems to be shitting out the beetle rather tan giving birth to it :D

I had a similar experience a while back. When I told that to a friend of mine he quizzed me on the nature of the chutney that was in the middle - apparently there is one which is virulently green, but with bits of red chillies thrown in that is the 'authentic' one.

And isn't 'paav' actually the round Portugese pao that the goans stuff their Chorizo sausages into?

Pao? Chorizo sausages? Goans?

Errmmmm...
