DUDES. Dudes, today I high-fived Chris Hadfield.

:DDDDDDDD

There are not enough capital D's out there, man. Woo!!!

Also, we got him to sign Karl's copy of his book ("An Astronaut's Guide to life on Earth," and a very entertaining read), and also a five-dollar bill. Because, you know what? He was the astronaut who installed the Canadarm II on Mir, and also the one who did it on ISS (he personally helped to build both space stations, as well as living on the ISS for five months, which is a pretty incredible thing to be able to say), and yes, that is actually him personally on the back of the current five-dollar bill. That is Chris Hadfield on the back of our five-dollar bill, and he not only signed it, he drew a little moustache on it. XD

When he signs his name, he turns the C at the start and the D at the end into the wings of a space ship, which is awesome. Pics in a day or two.

Because they didn't allow pics during the actual talk, of course, but... well, to drag it out a bit, he told us the story of how he became an astronaut, elaborating a bit on a few of the anecdotes in his book, and at the end of it, before the Q&A session, he played a guitar a bit: a verse or two of a song he wrote before he left Earth the last time, with someone from the Barenaked Ladies--they wrote the song, and filmed a short video of it with the lyrics to a whole bunch of schools across the whole country, and then, last May, all these schools had a live stream in from him up in the ISS, and they all got to sing along with it, in real time, all across Canada. Here, this is the video they sent out for the kids to practice to:

Incidentally, heh, during the talk today he paused after the line "If you could see our nation/From the International Space Station" to say how very difficult it was to work "International Space Station" into the lyrics.

And here, this is what it looked like on the day:

Unfortunately Karl's school didn't take part in it, which is too bad, because that is something pretty cool to have been part of. However, at least he can say he met the man and shook his hand, which is not a small thing to be able to say.

And then he segued into a few verses of his cover of Bowie's "Space Oddity," which is also awesome and now we can say we've heard him perform (part of) that live, which is also a pretty incredible and awesome thing to be able to say.

Then he answered a few questions from the audience (picking Karl, too, which was also cool; Karl asked how much time he had spent in space, which is when we found out he had worked on the construction of both Mir and the ISS before coming back to the ISS for this last long stretch), and that was that. He got a standing ovation (got one when he entered, too, of course, because DUDE CHRIS HADFIELD), and we all made our way out.

Well, I say "all," but actually, about, I don't know, maybe twenty or thirty people lingered, hoping to get autographs, same as us. We asked the ushers if they knew if he would come out and sign some, and they said probably not; and I asked if the hall had a back door the "performers" used, like the actor's back entrance at a theatre, and they said no, they had to go in and out the same way we did.

Well, he had to leave sooner or later, heh, so since we didn't have a pressing deadline I determined to stay until we had definitive word that he'd left, or he came out.

And I guess after maybe half an hour or so (with some of the ushers going, "They aren't leaving; should we shoo them out?" --Not kidding, heard an usher say those exact words lol), one of them came up to us in the hallway just outside the room's doors and very quietly and discreetly pointed to a little knot of people at the other end, and said he'd come out.

So we very quietly and discreetly made our way over, and joined the very happy, but quiet (and discreet, and polite lol) little line, and Karl and I got to shake his hand, and I high-fived him, and he signed Karl's book ("To Karl") and my five-dollar bill, and we got a picture taken with him--and then a second one because his assistant said the first one was a bit blurry, and off we went for sushi dinner.

So. Now I can say that not only did we get to go to his talk, which was fantastic, and meet the man and shake his hand, which was amazing, and get his autograph (yes!!)--I can say I high-fived Chris Hadfield. And it's probably a good thing you guys aren't actually here in person right now, because I'm pretty sure "I HIGH-FIVED CHRIS HADFIELD!!1!" is going to be, like, every third sentence I utter for the next week at least. 8DDDDD

Heh. One anecdote from the book he elaborated on is that, on his first launch ever, the "astronaut assistant" who strapped him in then said, "Your wife gave me a note for you," and gave him a little index card with a note that said "I love you." Which is all he says about that moment in the book but today he said that under that, she'd added, "Please don't die."

And then, under that, she'd added, in brackets, "(I have insurance)". With a little smiley face.

And then this guy who strapped him in and gave him the card says, "She gave me a kiss for you, too." XD And then the guy kisses him on the forehead.

And Chris is there, going, "Man, if I die today that is going to be my last memory." XD

He's a very entertaining speaker and if you have a chance to see him definitely do so; and if you don't, read his book because he's a very entertaining author, too.

So now I'm off to bed becausae I'm exhausted but I kind of don't want to, because I don't want the day to end, because, dudes, today I gave CHRIS HADFIELD a high five.

DUDE.
