Indy, I Love You!!!

I do love me some Indiana Jones.  The short, spoiler free version of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is that it was good.  Not great.  I'm not even sure I'd call it pretty good.  Some of the scenes in the movie completely kicked ass, and I was surprised by some of what did work really well for me.  Mostly, Shia LaBeouf surprised the hell out of me, ( Read more... )

"Good thing we're not grave robbers then." -- That was a good line. Also the academic lecture about quicksand was cute.

And now I'm going to be "that guy" and list my complaints.

* All Dave's complaints about the side characters -- spot on. Likewise letting Ray Winstone back in.
* Raiders of the Lost Ark did a much better job of humanizing Indy. In the 1930s, Indy is a believable 39-year-old action hero; he even "loses" fights on occasion! 20+ years later, he's morphed into Superman.
* Aliens: "Thanks for going to all this incredible effort to return this skull and avenge the misdeeds of the conquistadors. Now we'll kill you all."
* Why are the aliens still hanging around up through the 16th century? Not to collect human artifacts -- they clearly don't care about the trinkets (see above).
* And speaking of Aliens, what's with the tribesmen who apparently have nothing better to do than spend hours on end curled up in the walls? Do they have acid for blood too?
* Objects exhibiting *extremely* high magnetism, except when it's inconvenient for the plot.
* Cate Blanchett's role is not memorable, charming, or scary at all. Even the "secondary villains" from Raiders were better than the faceless boring Soviets. Tough Bald Truck Nazi, Shirtless Overmuscled Airplane Mechanic Nazi, Guy With Evil Monkey...

Okay, I'll stop now.

Don't stop!

I agree with a lot of those (especially the tribesman *in* the walls and the magnetism), but I had no problem with Cate Blanchett. I do agree that the Soviets lacked crazy looks. Last Crusade also had some weird looking Nazis. (Temple of Doom, however, mostly just had secondary Thuggees, and BIG Secondary Thuggee.)
