Because I know people want to know as little about this movie as possible I will put my warning here. There will be no spoilers and I wont say anything that reveals anything more than what is in the trailer or are very superficial observations about the movie.
Cloverfield, viral marketed, shrouded in mystery, speculated about and finally here. Excited to see what it was all about, my friends and I went to see it.
It was refreshing to see a re-invention of the monster movie that suited the times and didn't feel like one of those cookie cutter horror movies Hollywood seems to be very fond of. I actually went in thinking I would be disappointed in it and I was very excited to find out I wasn't.
Going in I was irritated that the whole thing had been shot with a shaky hand-held. I thought it was a cop out for not setting up proper shots. I was wrong. It added to the mystic of the movie. I was trying to struggle to see certain things and as a result, nothing was revealed too fast. On the down side, the movie will probably give you vertigo. I had to look away and burped a bit. Some people had a harder time than I did. I recommend periodically looking away and not focusing on anything during some scenes. Breaking away from the shaky-cam would have distracted from the movie and I fully support this carnival ride of a movie.
After the first few scenes I thought, "Great, the dialog is crap." It gets better. TRUST me. The movie actually makes room for a lot of humor and has some witty lines.
A lot of people missed certain things (I didn't). Just pay attention. I don't want to say when because, again, I want people going in knowing as much as they want.
I have heard complaints that it was too short. I didn't feel like it was short at all and letting it go on would have been a travesty and would have ruined it.
There is also a little (Link is a spoiler!)
TINY TINY (This link explains what it is because I didn't get it and I don't think you will unless you read this - if you do, you are a freak of nature) something at the end of the credits. Almost not worth staying for but it does change the ending. Regardless "Roar! Cloverfield Overture" is worth staying and listening to.
Now! Trailers! The Star Trek teaser is being shown with Cloverfield and it got my nerdy girl all riled up. I am super excited. I LOVED the original Star Trek (as well as TNG) and I am super happy that they are going back to TOS crew. :D
Also, the trailer for Iron Man...how can I not go see this? I use to watch the Iron Man cartoon was a little girl and thought that Black Sabbath had done a cover of the theme song from the cartoon (I was young and barely knew who Black Sabbath was).
And in conclusion, I liked Cloverfield. It is a monster movie. A very good monster movie that had brilliant marketing and was a lot of fun.
