When they first fall asleep together, cuddled up like shivering puppies, Gokudera mumbles, “Tenth,” in as reverential a tone he could manage half asleep. The wordnametitlealwayssaidwithadoration wakes Yamamoto up a little, makes him stir and he blinks sleepily at the sharp pain he’s starting to understand.
They’re knee deep in trouble and he’s just been blasted to high hell. By all intents and purposes, he should be dead, but Gokudera has a nasty temper and Yamamoto has somehow developed a tolerance to all things explosive. A hand, somehow free of calluses and he’s never been able to understand that, brushes hair out of his face and Gokudera hovers next to him, lays a kiss against his forehead and for a moment his life hasn’t been threatened and they’re back home again. But there’s a look in his eyes that he reads and bitter resentment and jealousy makes him want to snarl. Instead he says, “Go ahead,” and when Gokudera hesitates, adds, “I’ll be fine.” He whispers a breathless thanks punctuated with another kiss and then he’s gone. His body hurts all over and he thinks absently that he’s not a very good friend, much less a guardian.
At Tsuna’s wedding, the best man and impromptu wedding planner (the hired one took a sample of Bianci’s lovingly crafted wedding cake), is crying. He tells Yamamoto it’s just dirt, but he knows better and pulls him into his arms. Gokudera chokes into his new suit, silk and Zegna, and he feels out of sorts with himself. Some sort of bitter joy, a selfless wish for Gokudera to be happy, and an even greater selfish desire to see Gokudera cry, as long as he belongs to him. That last bit is the ruthlessness of a born assassin.
