i love how when we talk about 23 year olds binge drinking, living with (and off of) their parents until 30, impulsively quitting shitty entry level jobs, we talk about "emerging adulthood" and quote research about the not-yet fully formed brain. but then when we talk about 19 year olds with gun charges, possession, or gang violence, the conversation suddenly switches to "they should know better," that they're antisocial and callous, and we should charge them as adults. as if the brain research doesn't apply. as if science could possibly discriminate based on privilege.
