For once I got news about a new! service! at the same time as writerbeware - since I'm already on Barnes & Noble's emailing list.  They've now launched PubIt! as an e-book self-publishing setup (in open-source format).

I glanced through the FAQ.  It doesn't answer that I think is the most salient question about the service:
