1. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle

I've loved this book since I was a little girl. I loved that Meg and Calvin and Charles Wallace were not perfect characters, that they were flawed and messy but still lovable; I loved that Mrs. Whatsit & Co. were scruffy, battered angels of God; I loved the seamless blend of fantasy and reality and science. With all the hype about Stephenie Meyer's upcoming book Breaking Dawn, it's been on my mind a lot today. I really do have a huge admiration for Mrs. Meyer - she is an excellent storyteller and I truly appreciate the fact that she has brought sexless romances back from the grave.
