The 2012 North Texas Tornado Outbreak - Being in the middle of the action is NOT fun.

Apr 07, 2012 08:09

It's a few days late, but oh well. I've written about this on my DA journal but I just realized that I never wrote anything about it on my ACTUAL journal. I've been neglecting this thing for such a long time and I'm sorry to my LJ friends ( Read more... )

*hugs you tightly* I had completely forgotten you lived down in that area >< I am *so* glad you're okay, you as well as your family. I can't even begin to imagine how terrifying it must have been. Living in Denmark does that I have zero experience with tornadoes, so the most we get are hurricane leftovers, which there haven't been a lot of, though we got a bad one back in 2000 as well, and later in 2004 and 2010.

Hurricanes are destructive but at least you have quite a bit of advanced warning before they hit so you can secure your home and evacuate if need be (I'm sure you remember me evacuating for hurricanes a few times while I was in college).

Tornadoes, on the other hand, strike without warning. If you get a warning 10 minutes before one hits that is considered a LOT of lead time. That's why everyone around here has plans in place for when it happens. I always grab three things: my phone, my wallet, and my external hard drive because it has almost all of the artwork I've ever made on it, including my thesis.

We do get some bad hurricanes. So far, the worst ones we've had was in 2000, 2005 and 2010. They were all leftovers of really bad hurricanes that had rampaged in the USA as well, though the worst of them was the first in 2000. The latest one in 2010 was one I remember mostly, because we went to my sisters' inlaws place for Christmas, and had to spend the night. Both mom and I knew it had been a good idea the next morning, because we came across at least 3 or 4 people who had gotten stuck in the snow. (It was also the same year my dad passed away, as you know, so we had mostly agreed to it because... we just needed to get out of the house)

WOW.

I thought of you when we saw the news coverage that night, but had NO IDEA that your homes and families were so close to the impact zone!

Thank goodness you're ALL okay! That was a TOO close of a shave for Bree! S

Oh my god that's.... scary Oo. Indeed your niece was really lucky!!

But (okay I'm a n00b because I never saw a tornado), why it is not advised to go in the bathroom when there are risks like that?

This "event" was on TV even here, it was creeping me out :x I hope you're okay

They only told us to go in the freezers instead of the bathrooms at the restaurant because in that situation the freezers were much stronger than the bathrooms. At the local mall they had everyone inside go down into the mall's basement (which my mom and I didn't even know they had, actually). The Rangers were at the ballpark getting ready for a game when it hit and they went down to the locker rooms while all the employees inside the stadium went down to the tunnels underneath the field. At DFW airport the bathrooms are built with reinforcements to double as tornado shelters ( ... )
