Context Is For The Weak

Right: these are about a year old, so they feel fresh again. MGK takes a short, hilarious tour of Asterix & Obelix(2,3,4), Matt Fraction does the same with Doom Patrol (2,3,4). When a creator's (or creative team's) productivity on a single project goes long enough, it's pretty much impossible to not notice their personal idiosyncracies. It's interesting to compare these examples to creative properties like Marvel and DC's flagship characters, who certainly have interesting stories, but usually don't have the layer of personal vision unless you get a long run with specific people.

In writing, I suppose the parallel would be Terry Pratchett's universe, which is definitely uniquely his and has been for quite a while. I suppose this is why the geek community is a bit het up about Eoin Colfer writing a Hitchhiker's Guide novel: although he's a good writer, he's not Douglas Adams. It's not a good-or-bad comparison, it's a same-or-different comparison.

What else comes to mind with regards to creative projects that reflect their authors this strongly?

art, media diet, writing
