It’s official; I am going to be a benefits attorney (at least if everything works out this summer). After countless interviews and turning down a couple of well respected biglaw firms, I have finally accepted a summer associate position with a Pennsylvania Ave boutique here in the District. Everything about the firm seemed right during my callback, so I was pretty excited to get the offer, but when my professor told me that ‘firm X is the best in the field,’ it really sealed the deal. I will be there for 11 weeks.
I promised Brandy that if I got a job paying a biglaw salary, I would buy her a sushi boat, so this weekend she is getting one.
Now I have to start boning up on ERISA, which is definitely one of the most difficult and least sexy areas of law. Not only is the statute voluminous and confusing, but there is a vast sea of federal (sometimes conflicting) case law to learn.* One of my future co-workers described employee benefits as the area where the dorky lawyers go, which is a considerable statement considering that there aren’t any ‘cool’ lawyers. Luckily, the school has free subscriptions to BNA for students, so I get the benefits report emailed to me every morning. I am also using the BNA Benefits Practice Center.
Speaking of benefits, I am slowly making progress on my independent study, which has morphed into a paper about whether Maryland’s Walmart law is preempted. I am trying to beat some other people to the punch, so that I can get it published.
*A few attorneys at the DOL told me that they would rather die than be transferred to the Employee Benefits division.
