All taken at our local oval. Helicopters and a shot or two of the awful smoke that had us nervous. Photos and commentary by sister.

The police helicopter. It had a red bucket attached to a long rope underneath it. There are some helicopters that have water tanks underneath them, others can have the buckets attached.

Wildcat, one of the ones specially designed for fire fighting.

You can see the tanks and nozzle for the hose to pick up water here.

I think this is the skycrane Shania, going off the colour. She'd be going off to collect water from the golf course.

Wildcat again. A couple of them came and went a few times, also Wildcat moved across the field to refuel.

Yellow one landing, with either Shania or Delilah in the background.

Yellow and blue one.

The police helicopter's bucket.

Big flare up of smoke (long lens on, hence the rounded edges).

Close up.

Close up with a helicopter visible through the smoke in the bottom right corner. Wouldn't want that job.

The police helicopter (I believe) in action.

I stopped on the way home from uni at the overpass above the freeway. This is mostly smoke you can see in the distance.

A completely empty freeway. They had it closed to allow emergency vehicle access as well as because the smoke was thick up at the fire site.

Dad got a photo of Shania. You can see the nifty nozzle it uses to suck up the water.
