Well, at this point, Marley has scratched the left armrest to stuffing, and she's working on the right side now.
The whole couch is a gross mess of nasty old upholstry, and has holes in the cushions...
Time to go fabric shopping.

I've generally found that trying to train a cat is just an exercise in frustration. I'm not sure about the sprays that are supposed to keep cats off of furniture, but I'm willing to bet that if Marley is as stubborn as you say she is... she's not going to care a fig what you spray on furniture.
What I did, and you'll see someday if you ever come up to my humble abode, is that I found an old, crappy wooden chair that is just theirs to scratch the shit out of. I feel like they like it cuz it's a real piece of furniture so they think they're getting away with something, but HA! Joke's on them! I don't want to sit in their crappy chair anyway.
Have you ever tried clipping her nails? I don't suggest it if she's never had it done before cuz she'll only turn your arms into bleeding shreds of skin if it's new to her.
This is very rambly because you brought up cats and I'm a crazy cat lady. For reals. I could talk about the critters all the live-long day. :D
I just noticed I don't have a crazy cat lady icon. This should be remedied. :/

So... I'm hoping I can get her interested in something else, since it will be a new apartment, and I'll cover the fibery couch with something flat and not as interesting to shred... and see what happens...
