Weekend at Grace and Baldvin's, part 3

Jul 15, 2014 16:57

Sunday began lazily with a little board gaming, then I whipped together the last of the salmon, some of the bacon and some leeks into a thoroughly delicious quiche for the three of us. We then cleaned the house a little and spent time talking. I haven't mentioned yet that in the rose bush that abuts Grace and Baldvin's front porch, a pair of swallows had built a nest and there were three cute baby birds in the nest. I took a little video of them impulsively craning their heads straight up with beaks wide open, expecting their parents to be back with food. They were so cute! Though the parent birds didn't like it whenever we'd leave the house because we'd always have to pass close by that bush. They did like it, however, when I put out some loopers for them to eat that we had found on the farmer's market broccoli (I'm happy *someone* was happy to find them, because we certainly weren't).

In the afternoon, we watched the World Cup final. We all were pretty ambivalent about who should win, though we were all slightly leaning in Germany's favor. I was relieved that the game didn't go into a shootout and the German goal was clean and well executed.

Grace made spaghetti bolognaise for dinner, which was incredibly tasty. I also think I was carb-starved from the past two days because I devoured a ton of it. Even though I wanted to play some more board games, we got into a very long political discussion. It was a calm discussion and none of the points were very heated even though we disagreed on several matters -- this is exactly the kind of political discussion that feels worthwhile, because both sides are listening to what the other person is saying. We still tried to play a round of Ticket to Ride, which I had never played before, but Baldvin was falling asleep so we had to call it a night. I left the next morning, in time for me to still go into Fairfield and meet my REU students
