Semester over, CANT

May 25, 2013 16:13

This past weekend I spent the whole time grading. I finally got everything done and all the grades submitted Monday evening. Boy did that blow, but it's all over.

On Tuesday we took Carmen to the vet. She weighs less than she did last year, which has the vet worried because she was a small cat to begin with. Her intestines still seem to be inflamed like they were last year. We're going to have some stool and urine work done.

I drove down to NJ that afternoon since I was scheduled to attend CANT but the Metro-North service was all nuts on account of the derailment and collision the previous week. That meant I missed the first day of the conference.

On Wednesday I went to CANT, gave my talk in the morning, which was well received. I met with a whole bunch of people, some old some new. I got invited to a conference in France in June, but the organizer only has money to cover hotel and local expenses. Unfortunately flights to France are a bit expensive in the summer. I've used up the little money I had from Smith and I will not have started yet at Fairfield, so I don't have any institutional money. To add insult to injury, I also got informed that day that I was rejected for a modest travel grant I had applied for. I'd still like to go because it looks to be a particularly useful conference, but this'll be the fourth conference this year that I'm essentially paying for out of pocket (including CANT) and these costs are beginning to chafe.

Thursday and Friday was more conferencing and today is the conference barbecue. I'm going to be heading back to CT after that. All of this talk at the conference has me itching to do research. Being done with teaching has me feeling so liberated to do all these things I've been holding off on doing, but now I don't know which one I want to do next!
