our supermarket

So the nearest big supermarket to us is Shop Rite in Hamden, the next town over. I don't mind going there, since my family used to go to Shop Rite in NJ and they had decent stuff. But this one, every time Christian and I have gone, we feel surrounded by Jewish retirees. I'm not stereotyping here: every time we've gone, more than half the customers have had grey hair and the kosher food section is enormous. I've never seen so many choices of pickled herring in the US before (this is praise, not a complaint).

Case in point: today there was a little old lady in front of me at the cash register. The only thing she bought was 8 24oz. bottles of Gold's borscht. Crazy! Did she wake up this morning feeling kvassy?

Though there I was, right behind her with only a bag of shallots, heavy cream, and 8 bags of frozen cheese ravioli. Hey -- they were on sale 2 for $3 and they're yummy ones from Buffalo!
