in Reno

Well, we're in Reno. We rented a truck this morning in Berkeley, drove up to Vacaville and loaded it up with everything we had in storage, closed our account there and drove across the Sierra Nevadas. We no longer have any belongings in California (well, except for that giant tub of chicken bouillon in Mischa's care). This morning, however, I awoke with the feeling that I absolutely did not want to have right now: I'm coming down with a cold. Stuffy nose, headache, loss of appetite. Thanks, Bay Area, for your extra low temperatures. I at least think I can fight it off: the drive to Reno today was lighter than the rest of the trip so we'll have more time to sleep. I also bought a half gallon of fresh-squeezed OJ from Andronico's to take on the road. Oh, and Vicki gave me some betacarotenecodliveroilomega3fattySt.John'swort, so I'm sure I'll either feel great in the morning or have an herb garden growing out of my ass.

We had dinner tonight with Christian's colleague, Brook, and her two young daughters. She showed us the hip, artistic neighborhood in Reno, which we had no idea existed nestled among the casinos. Reno always struck us as depressingly centered around the casinos, but now we know there's a pocket of Bohemia fighting out its space among the handful of small buildings not razed and turned into neon slot machine pyramids or parking lots.

Being in the Bay Area was fun. We got to see a lot of our friends, especially once_a_banana and psifenix and Vicki. We went across the Bay into SF a couple times, partook of our foie gras from France, and went to Trannyshack. It was my first time and I have to say it didn't live up to its hype at all until the last number, which was great. But dancing afterwards was lots of fun. I wonder, though, if that wasn't the night that exposed me to getting sick, because I was all sweaty in the cold SF night. :-\

We had fun, Bay peoples! We miss you all and you're welcome to see us in Haven Nouveau.
