strike

The high school students are striking again today. This wasn't a pre-announced strike like yesterday's general strike, but similarly "spontaneous" like the high schoolers' strike Monday. Christian and I don't know the extent of what's happening, since we're outside of the main part of the city where the protests are occuring, but all the public transportation is severely disrupted. Even the Metro line D, which runs on an unmanned, automatic system, was completely out of service today. Helicopters were flying by just a few hours ago, though I don't know whether they were the police or the news. I'd guess the former since "news choppers" as a concept doesn't really seem to have taken off in France.

So our plans of going into campus today were totally cancelled because we can't get out of our neighborhood. At least the stores are open and business is operating as usual. Our internet inexplicably went out an hour ago and we weren't sure if it was related to the strikes, or just another screwup from our ISP like last month, where it was out for a week. It was quite a stunning prospect: not being connected to the internet and phone at home for another week, but neither being able to go to campus to get our essential communication done.

Today has been a pretty bad day for being frustrated at France.* So I went downstairs to the bakery and got fancy desserts for dinner tonight. I need some positive Frenchism to balance out all the negative lately.

*a second reason will probably have a friends-locked LJ post

protest, internet, france, police
