Update on Chinese restaurant fiasco

Jan 27, 2008 21:50

So we went for dinner to the Chinese restaurant that had all the police and out-of-control party last night. We asked the woman what happened. She said that a guy had come a week ago, saying they wanted to rent out the restaurant for a birthday party. The woman asked if they wanted dinner cooked too, but the guy said no, they just needed the space. That seemed okay--maybe they don't like Chinese food--and sure enough a few days later they came by with a cake and cheese for the party. Things seemed to be going fine. The day of the party, the people come and start moving all the tables into the back. The owners were a little perplexed, wondering where the people would sit to have cake. The people said there was going to be dancing. Okay... Then the people start arriving. In LARGE numbers. The people had said 30 people were coming but very soon there was twice that. The owners wanted to stop more people from coming, because 65 was the legal limit established by the fire marshall. They found the guy in the crowd and he was charging people a cover to come in, something the owners didn't know he was going to do. He also refused to turn away people. So the owners called the cops, who broke the party up. The guy who rented the place snuck away in the confusion. Since this was the restaurateurs' first time hosting a party, they hadn't thought of getting a copy of his ID to know who he was and they hadn't gotten a deposit, so the guy left without paying anything. Needless to say, the owners learned their lesson. That was a totally asshole thing to do by that guy though.
