BAD Girls

So this past Saturday after long months of planning I was finally able to make it to a roller derby match courtesy of the Bay Area Derby Girls. I managed to wrangle up
codobo     and P.  Here they are waiting expectantly for the important event.

So after going round and round in downtown San Jose looking for parking we thought we were late. We ran to the place (much to codobo's chagrin) only to get there and find everybody just sitting around waiting in the front. Finally they open the ticket window, but the will call window was mysteriously closed. We decided to get in line for tickets only to find out once we get into the window that we were in the wrong window (geez really?). I proceed to tell them that there is no one on will call. They looked surprised but I managed to convince them I really did buy tickets online like almost nobody else. We go to the other window that is now open to find complete disarray. We saw the list of will call and we might have been one of like 4 groups of people. So after getting stamps and no tickets we were finally able to get in.

Inside since we are some of the first people there we get front line seats. The track is basically tape on a basketball court. The setup was really nice with plenty of people but not too crowded.

The rules are rather complicated. But it basically involves 5 skaters per team with 1 from each team being the "jammer". The jammer scores points by passing players of the opposing team. The teams try to block the opposing jammer from passing them and help out their jammer.

It was an exciting match between the Oakland Outlaws and Richmond Wrecking Belles (in San Jose). The other team in the 3 team league is the San Francisco She-Devil. Ironic given their skating venue. Anyways, there were announcers (kinda lame ones), they gave everyone posters making fun of the various players. We got a Nina Burrito sign with a Burrito on wheels. We guessed it was making fun of the player called Nina Baretta 9mm. Even the refs had interesting names (John Diss and Mindiannapolis 500). Unfortunately Richmond completely outclassed Oakland (we managed to sit in the Oakland section so we were rooting for Oakland).

At halftime we had a show presented by the Devil-Ettes. A go-go dancing troupe from San Francisco. It was... Um how can I say this... "interesting".

But the coolest part of the evening was us finding out where the Devil-Ettes were performing next.

Anyways despite the fact that Oakland lost we had an awesome time. We may go to the championship game between the victorious Richmond and San Francisco on Dec 8th. We will however skip the online tickets and buy at the door this time. Maybe we can get some others to come.

Here is some roller derby in horrible horrible youtube "quality".
