It's just a CD.
That's what Kris tells himself as he makes his way to the auditorium. It's just a CD, full of songs he'd spent the last three weeks scouring the internet for, in hopes that Adam would listen to it and fall deeply in love with him. Or something.
He's nervous, and with good reason. Adam is... Adam. He's tall and fierce. His voice is perfect and he's sweet and everyone loves him, at least the people who aren't jerks. He barely even knows who Kris is. They've had a total of one class together and Kris was too busy being shy and awkward to even talk to him more than once.
But Adam's also graduating in two days. After that, Kris won't see him again until God knows when because everyone knows Adam is leaving for LA and not looking back. It's all he has been talking about for months.
So this is Kris's last chance. He's going to march into the auditorium, hand Adam the CD and then run away. Taking a deep breath and straightening his shoulders, he reaches for the door handle but it meets him halfway as the door swings open and a flurry of students pile out. Kris backs up against the wall to get out of their way, ducking his head when he sees Adam in the middle of the pack. Maybe he won't see him.
"Kris, hey!"
Or maybe he will.
"Adam, hi..." Kris shuffles his feet, clutching his messenger bag closer.
Adam walks over to him, stopping about a foot away and leaning against a pillar in the foyer. "I didn't think you'd be here this late."
Kris starts to panic, frantically searching for an excuse for why he'd be around hours after school ended. "Yeah, I was uh... waiting for someone. Some- Cale, he was staying with a teacher. Waiting for him." Kris is a horrible liar, but Adam doesn't seem to notice.
"Ah, cool." Adam gives him an easy smile and Kris feels his stomach do a small backflip. "What'cha got there?" He gestures towards Kris's left hand, where he's clutching the CD for dear life.
"Oh, that's... that's nothing." Belatedly, he hides the CD behind his back, praying that Adam will let it drop.
No luck. "Doesn't seem like nothing." Adam smirks and leans in, reaching around Kris effortlessly to grab for the CD. Kris swallows hard, realizing suddenly that Adam is close. Really close. And he's pressed up against him in places that are going to become really uncomfortable really soon.
Weighing his choices, Kris does the only thing possible. He loosens his grip on the CD, hoping Adam will back away quickly. He does, flipping the CD over to read the front out loud, "For Adam."
Kris kicks himself mentally. Why did he write that on the cover? Oh, right. Because his other options were I love you, Marry me now, and I wish you'd notice me or ask me out on a date or something preferably before you leave for LA and become a superstar. 'For Adam' seemed like the safest bet.
Adam gives him a look. "For me?" Kris nods mutely, done with trying to make sense come out of his mouth. "Really? No one's ever made me a CD before, thanks!" Adam leans in again and Kris's eyes widen a bit in alarm, not quite calmed down from the last time Adam was in proximity. But Adam seems oblivious and wraps him up his arms, giving him a tight hug. Kris is pretty sure his heart stopped beating a second or so ago and he melts against Adam, breathing him in for a moment just because he can.
And then it's over far too quickly for Kris's liking and Adam is back against the pillar, a thoughtful look on his face. "Hmmm... I've got a CD player in my car, you wanna go listen with me?"
Kris jerks his head back and forth. "I have... Cale, I have to get Cale." Just once, he wishes he could sound like a normal person talking to Adam. Just once.
"Right. Cale." Kris thinks Adam looks almost disappointed but that might be wishful thinking on his part. "Maybe another time?"
"Yeah, sure. Definitely." Probably not.
Adam gives him a small smile. "See ya, Kris."
"See ya..." He watches Adam walk away, CD in hand, and he wonders absently what he just got himself into.

"You made him a mixed tape?" Katy sounds incredulous and Kris can't blame her. He never did anything like this the entire year they spent as a couple freshman year, but this is Adam. He kind of throws everything Kris ever knew on its head.
"Yeah, just some songs I thought he'd like, you know..." He rubs at the back of his neck, turning away from her to smooth out his bedspread.
She raises an eyebrow at his back. "What kind of songs?" He sort of shrugs and she takes that as initiative to turn to his desk, click on his iTunes and finding the playlist he so cleverly titled, "For Adam." He notices her silence just a moment too late and then, "Oh, you've got to be kidding me."
"Katy, no, don't!" He hurries over, trying to block the screen but she shoves him away easily.
"In My Life, by the Beatles?" He feels his face flush and he stops fighting her, knowing she's not gonna let this go until she's gotten her fill. "Oh my god, you put 'Kiss From A Rose' on here too?!"
"He sang it at last month's open mic!" he whines helplessly, flopping back on the bed and groaning.
She's quiet for a bit, but he can hear her clicking, and then the gasp. "Oh my god. 'Brown Eyes' by GaGa?"
Kris sits up quickly and shakes his head. "He loves GaGa, that's my favorite of her songs!"
She spins the chair around and smirks at him. "I cannot believe you made him this."
"It wasn't supposed to be a big deal," he insists.
Katy crosses her arms over her chest, pursing her lips together. "Yeah, you made it a big deal when you gave him a CD full of songs that scream, 'I like you, pick me!', Kristopher."
He buries his face in his hands, feeling like his entire world is collapsing around him. He's so fucked.

Kris knows his life isn't a romantic comedy, so he wasn't expecting some Grand Gesture or anything, but he was sort of expecting something from Adam. A passing thanks, a nod in the cafeteria at lunch, something. But he hasn't seen Adam all day and he can't help but think that Adam listened to the CD, realized Kris is totally head over heels for him, and decided to stay as far away from him as possible.
He makes his way to his locker after his final class, glad for the first time in months that tomorrow is the last time he has to see Adam; he's not sure he can face him even if Adam did actually have something to say. Sighing, he starts throwing his books haphazardly into his messenger bag.
"Careful, books have feelings too." He drops his bag at the familiar voice behind him, everything in it skidding across the floor.
"Adam, hi." He drops to his knees, gathering all his stuff awkwardly, stuffing it back into his bag. Seriously, he's going to take lessons for how to talk to cute boys. He needs them. Kris bites the inside of his cheek and takes a silent vow to not speak anymore until he gets those lessons.
He stands up and Adam's watching him carefully, an unreadable expression on his face. He licks his bottom lip and says, "So, that was some CD you made me..."
Kris's mouth opens without any direction from his brain. "Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I wasn't even going to give it to you, but then you showed up and saw it and I couldn't lie and say it wasn't for you because I think you're the only Adam I know, or at least the only one I'd make a CD for. You're the only person I've ever made a CD for, so yeah, I'm sorry about the songs and everything. I don't know why I even made it, I'm pretty sure I'm insane, they should check me into a padded room, I-"
"I like you too."
"I... what?" Kris couldn't shut up and now he can't even form thoughts.
A slow grin takes over Adam's face and Kris thinks he's kind of really beautiful when he smiles. "I like you too." Kris is still silent and Adam's smile falters a bit and he looks very uncertain all of a sudden. "You do like me, right?"
Kris's eyes get comically wide. "Yeah, I... I..." His mouth is uncomfortably dry and he glances down at his dirty sneakers awkwardly.
"Then I like you too. And I didn't know you liked GaGa."
He forces himself to meet Adam's gaze again, swallowing hard. "Yeah, I... I do."
Adam's smiling again and it's making Kris sort of breathless. "You wanna go get some ice cream?" Kris nods, a bit too enthusiastically maybe, and Adam tilts his head down the hall, picking up Kris's bag from the floor and handing it to him. Kris takes it wordlessly and slams his locker shut, following Adam.
Nothing could top this moment except maybe holding Adam's hand. But his palms are all sweaty and it would probably be really gross, so he just sighs a bit. Adam gives him a sideways glance and reaches out to wrap his arm around Kris's shoulders, tugging him in close to his side, their hips bumping together as Adam leads them toward the exit. Their bodies slot together perfectly and he has to fight back a grin. He wanted to hold Adam's hand but this is a million times better, he thinks.
