http://glamaiira.livejournal.com/11553.html Kris hadn’t heard them coming. They hit him from behind and he cursed himself for letting his guard down. Thanks to the three beers he’d just had, he was a little slower and not too stable on his feet, making him fall over as the second blow hit his lower back. There were only two of them, but he was alone and, caught off guard like this, they had him at a big disadvantage. Of course, he would never give in without putting up a fight, but his back was aching, and as something sharp penetrated his left side he knew he wouldn’t be able to win this fight. Not if he wanted to live, anyway.
He managed to kick one of his attackers on the calf and scrambled to his feet. Though he never saw the second man move, something hit him hard at the right leg and as he went back down on his knees, the sound of bones cracking reached his ears. A painful cry cut through the night and it took a second before he realized it came from himself.
What happened next was a blur: Blows and kicks. Slashing and the taste of blood in his mouth. He wasn’t sure how or when he’d managed to shift forms, but the wolf gave him enough strength to get away. He ran until he just couldn’t take the pain anymore, the broken bones and loss of blood making him wobbly. He collapsed by the door of his destination. Moments later, the door opened. Wide ice blue eyes stared at him in disbelief. Oh, he had never before been so happy upon seeing those eyes. ‘Please, see it’s me. Please, Adam. Please.’

Adam scrambled to his feet and opened the door before the bell stopped ringing.
“Thanks for coming.”
“Danielle said it was an emergency?”
Adam nodded rapidly, showing Nate inside. When Nate’s’ eyes fell on the wolf’s body he made a sound that sounded like swearing and kneels down on the floor, opening the bag he had brought with him.
“How did this happen?”
There was sharpness in Nate’s voice, even though he kept it soft for the sake of the wolf while examining his injuries.
“He got hit by a car.” Adam hoped he sounded believable. He didn’t know how exactly Kris had ended up so badly hurt, but he had a feeling it wasn’t by any accident. “I saw it and decided to take him home. To help him.”
Nate nodded, his eyes never leaving the wounded animal. He started to pull some stuff out of his bag. Things Adam had never seen before in his life. One, though, looked very similar to his own razor. Then there were some kind of blue bandages, and Adam knew he’d seen those before. It was a program on TV, Animal Rescue or something, and this one cat had had a broken leg. The sickening feeling in his stomach was back again.
“His leg, how… Is he going to be okay?”
“His right hind leg appears to be broken. No other fractures, though he’s got an open wound on his left side.” Nate gave the wolf a shot with something that Adam guessed was some sort of sedative. “But yeah, he should be okay. Make sure he gets some rest, at least for a couple of hours, and that he eats. If the wound opens up or anything happens, call me.”
Adam nodded and took the card with Nate’s name and number. He then watched in silence, a lonely tear rolling down his cheek, as Nate started taking care of Kris’s injuries. Adam’s heart clenched, ‘Why would someone do something like this to Kris?’
By the time Nate was done treating Kris, it was almost three in the morning. Adam was exhausted and all he wanted to do was get some sleep. There had been a lot to deal with tonight and he needs to let his brain sort things out.
“Thanks for your help. Really.”
“No problem.” Nate handed Adam two bottles of pills. “You can mix these into his food. The large ones are antibiotics. The smaller ones help reduce the pain.”
“Okay. Thank you.”
Nate offered him a smile and then looked over at Kris.
“Take care, buddy.” He patted Adam on the shoulder as he walked out the door. “Night.”
When the door closed Adam turned to look at the wolf. He looked just as exhausted as Adam felt.
“I’ll get you a blanket and pillow.”
After laying out the thin blanket over the big, furry animal and gently placing the pillow under its head, Adam smiled and gave Kris a kiss on the top of his nose.
“Good night.”
