“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” -Abraham Lincoln

“Adam, what are you doing?” Kris asks, getting up from the bed with a sheet wrapped around his shoulders. He watches Adam move about the room, trying to find his clothes that were thrown around the room just a few hours before.

“I’m doing what I should have done two months ago.” Adam answers, putting on his shirt and pants.

Kris eyes go wide. He can’t believe that Adam is leaving him. “No, please…we can work this out.”

“Work what out, Kris?” Adam says those words louder than he intended, but doesn’t apologize. “We? We are nothing.”

“How can you say that with a straight face? I love-” He wants to continue but Adam cuts him off.

“Don’t even finish that sentence. Don’t say things you don’t mean.” Adam growls lowly. Kris tries to say something else, but his voice fails him. Adam ties up the laces on his boots and then throws on his leather jacket. He walks to the bedroom door and is halfway out when he turns around.

“Kris…your heart is in two places right now. You’re still hanging on to your marriage for the sake of looks and morality, but I don’t deserve to be only half-loved by someone. I need the whole thing. That may sound selfish, but it’s the truth.”

“Adam…please…”Kris voice breaks with inevitable tears.

“Come and see me when you get your shit together and have made a decision.” And with that Adam is gone.

Kris doesn’t call Adam. When Adam leaves that day he gets a call from Katy and she tells him that he doesn’t have to pick her up from the airport because she knows that he’s been really busy and needs his rest. Kris wants to protest, but he can’t find the energy. He just cries himself to sleep. He cries for be unfaithful to Katy. He cries for not giving his all to Adam. He cries for being the spineless coward that he is.

He cries because he is desperately in love with Adam and doesn’t know what to do about it.

“I’m leaving.” Katy says one day.

Kris lifts his head from his piano to see Katy standing the doorway of the music room with a duffle bag over her shoulder.

“What?” Kris asks dumbly.

“You heard me, Kristopher. I am leaving.” She says as she adjusts the duffle strap on her shoulder. “I’m going back to Arkansas.”

“For a vacation?” Kris knows that it isn’t for a vacation, but he throws it out there anyway.

“Kris…I feel like your heart is not fully into our marriage anymore. So before you drop the bomb on me…I’ve decided to leave.”

“You don’t have to leave. We can work this out.” The lies feel disgusting rolling off of Kris tongue and he can tell that Katy doesn’t believe him either.

“I love you Kris, but I can see that being in this marriage is torture for you and that your heart is somewhere else, or belongs to someone else.” She says those words like she knows exactly who that someone else is.

“So I guess this is it.” Kris whispers. He is unsurprisingly relieved.

“I’ll call you to let you know that I’ve arrived safely.”

“I’m sorry that it had to end like this.” Kris offers.

Katy nods and then disappears out the door.

“What are you doing here?” Adam asks, letting Kris into his house.

“You told me to come and see you when I’ve gotten my shit together.” Kris says in a matter of fact tone.

“Well, shit! I didn’t think you’d actually do it.” Adam laughs a bit.

Kris frowns. “Way to have faith in me.”

“Can you blame me? Fuck, Kris! It’s been nearly five months.” Adam shakes his head. “What brought this on?”

“Katy left me.”

“So now that you don’t have her, you come running to me and realize that I am the one that you want?” Adam asks dubiously.

“It’s not like that, Adam.” Kris sighs.

Adam crosses his arms. “Then tell me what’s it like?”

“I love you, Adam! That’s what it’s like. I would have told Katy about us that exact same day if the fucking loyal husband in me didn’t take over.”

“So that’s your excuse for five months of this?” Adam wonders.

“What more do you want?” Kris wants to cry.

“I want you to show me that you love me. I want you to hold my hand when we are walking down the street. I want you to kiss me like I’m the only one who matters to you. I want you to be cheesy as hell and make me breakfast in bed. I want you to show me that I am your one and only.” Adam is crying by this point and it breaks Kris’s heart.

“I can do all of that, Adam. You know I can.” And to prove his words, he wraps his arms around Adam’s neck and pushes their lips together. The kiss is full of love, heartbreak and every single emotion that they’ve both felt in the last five months. The kiss kills all of Adam’s doubts.

“Fuck Kris…”

“I love you.”

Adam nods and brings their lips together for a second time.
