Doing Shipping Wrong, Day One: the ship you don't want to be endgame

This is a fun shipping meme posted by rosaxx50.

This is most definitely shipping it wrong, as the whole point, the underlying current of their entire relationship, was that they were destined to be together. I am going against hundreds of years of canonical character-building and I laugh in the face of it, hahaha.

I kid. I actually do really like Gwen and Arthur as a couple! However, I think what I liked most about them was the innocence and longing between them when they didn’t have each other and, honestly, thought they never would.

There was something so completely sweet about them stealing glances and kisses and picnics. About Gwen teaching him how to be a more considerate and polite ruler, and about Arthur teaching her that it’s okay to stand up for herself. Arthur risking everything to save her, and Gwen doing her best to protect him in turn. It was because they couldn’t have each other, but the understanding that they would be perfect for each other that sold this ship to me. And, as well, the way in which the characters dealt with it: no woe or tearful goodbyes. Instead, they had their moments where they could, and didn’t doubt that they were there for each other, even when they couldn’t do it publicly. What is it about this absolutely-innocent UST that I loved?

I did enjoy the way the characters developed into their role as husband and wife, and how Gwen matured into queen... but it wasn’t the same as their early relationship. Perhaps it was the three-year gap between season four and five, because I thought they were sweet in their married lives, as a couple would be after three years of marriage, but I just didn't ship them anymore.

In addition, there is much to be said about the Merlin/Arthur post-reincarnation ship. This will be spoken about (probably at length, let's be honest) in a later meme, so I won't get into it here. I am just saying, if there is a way I can ship both simultaneously, I am going to hold onto it screaming all the way down and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Well, you could laugh at my pain or join me in my anguish with your fangirly ways. These are actually both excellent options, so go ahead and do that!

If you like Arthur/Gwen too:
