This is a meme thingy I found
here on Tumblr.
Tamora Pierce's books need more love, and I need more of an excuse to talk about them!
Emelan!
There is so much I love about these books.
I started reading Circle of Magic back in elementary school, right about the time I started in on The Immortals series, and I always loved the idea of ambient magic and its place in everyday life. There is something more compelling about the magic in this world than either the Gift or Wild Magic to me.
And while I love most of the Tortall characters, Sandry, Briar, Tris and Daja are of course central to why, exactly, Emelan will always have a special place in my heart. Each of them feels so completely real, and their dynamic in pairs or in a group are absolutely engaging. Even when they are apart, I find their particular quirks and personalities, their magics, and the issues they face can hold my attention for a complete reading even years after I first read the books (and after multiple re-readings, too).
Plus, the crime-novel aspect the Circle Opens quartet, and the political intrigue of Will of the Empress is more my kind of thing than the coming-of-age tales of Tortall.
