Intro
They talk about how spring allergies are already kicking in- Koyama's already feeling it in his nose and eyes.
Chinese Tourists in Hokkaido
Hokkaido, in Japan's north, is famous in February-March for it's Snow Festival, skiing and delicious crab. There are tons of Chinese tourists that visit there for the winter. news every checked out what stores are doing to try and attract these customers. Some places have signs in English, Korean or Chinese. Some have started having Chinese speaking staff as well. In Japan, Chinese tourists are famous for buying a lot and extravagant spending so stores what to bring them in as much as possible!
However even with all the Chinese tourists in Hokkaido, it still ranks number 8 on the most popular places for tourists to visit. To attract more visitors they'll probably need to add more Chinese or at least English signs so the tourists know what stores sell.
Koyama comments that when he visited China Town in Yokohama for their new year's celebration he could tell how they were working hard to attract Chinese tourists.
Teikoku Gekijo celebrates 100 years
There is a video about how the Imperial Garden Theater is celebrating it's 100 year anniversary. They show a video with a bit of the press conference for this and also show how advanced the stage is. After the video Koyama comments that he got to perform there as a back dancer for SHOCK when he was a Junior. He says the meals at the cafeteria where delicious too.
Raising foods at home
In studio they have some strawberries and sunny lettuce that can be grown at home! Raising the plants yourself, you can eat them fresh and knowing they're safe. As long as you have a sunny window or veranda, there's no reason you can't! Koyama says his grandma likes to grow fruits and vegetables so he'd like to teach her about these next time he sees her.
They then show a video showing how popular growing your own food has become recently, especially in families with children and with elderly men. One person they interview has grown over 70 different varieties of fruits/vegetables on her veranda. This year the seed selling business is hoping to push the sale of mini melon seeds and "kids peppers" which have been altered to grow without that bitterness peppers normally have. The most popular vegetables now are mini tomatoes, cucumbers and spring onions.
Ki ni Naru
Strawberries
It's now strawberry season! Ki ni Naru investigates how different brands of strawberry are competing for popularity. One brand are huge in size and they cost 10,000 yen a piece (over 100USD). How these strawberries are raised is a business secret though. Even with the high price, they're still selling! Within Japan there are all types of strawberry brands, depending on where and how they were raised.
Koyama visits a green house of "yayoihime" strawberries and is surprised by just how sweet and juicy they are. He also goes to see how the strawberries are packaged and helps out a bit. While doing so he's instructed where to put the skinny "Johnny's like" strawberries and Koyama is surprised. "There's Johnny's styled strawberries!?" and the ladies there reply "Of course!" The people raising yayoihime strawberries in Gunma prefecture hope one day they could be sold in Tokyo. They let Koyama try a yayoihime on ichigo daifuku and Koyama thinks the mix of sweetness is perfect!
